What should a new client know about working with you?

We will first establish rapport--known as the therapeutic alliance. The therapeutic relationship is of the utmost importance in effective therapy. Therapy cannot proceed without it being established. Once we have determined that we are a good fit, we will work on the issues that first brought you to therapy, and mutually and collaboratively establish your goals. Both may change as therapy progresses, but therapeutic flexibility is key. My approach to therapy is integrative, meaning that I use informed aspects of many different forms of therapy, with us mutually establishing what works. While collaboration is essential, I will also be directive when the situation or issue calls for it. This is a journey we take together.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

A typical session starts with checking in, to gauge progress and discuss any new and important additions to how we have been using the therapeutic relationship. Once established, we proceed with any important issues with which we left off at the last session, and continue to work on stated goals. A new client can expect a warm and accepting environment, where a non-judgmental approach is taken to form our relationship and for your issues to garner the utmost professional approach. We work collaboratively and sometimes directly, to address your presenting problems. Inital paperwork for your first appointment is sent through TherapyNotes and will need to be completed before our first session.

I am so grateful to Dr. Maurino for his support and guidance. He is compassionate, knowledgeable and trustworthy. He provided me insight and tools that I needed to navigate Myself through a very difficult time in my life. I highly recommend Dr. Maurino!
Dr Maurino provides excellent service. I have been a patient for 2 years and he is always prompt for appointments and always professional. He is empathetic and courteous with great bedside manners. He makes it comfortable for conversation and allows a natural flow to develop making it easy and natural to speak with him. You will not be disappointed. Highly recommended
Jim Maurino is a practical man with a deep reservoir of empathy. He convinced me of what was real about myself and the people around me, and what was maladaptive behaviour and perceptions. Talking with him was like a conversation with someone I trusted enough to be fully honest with so that I could talk about the most uncomfortable parts of life, and then gave me the tools to overcome my discomfort so that I could heal and grow. I ended my time with Jim with my perception greatly widened, and in ways I would not have allowed myself to hope for on my own. He truly understands the human experience and what to foster in a person. Don't get me wrong, he's not a magician and you still have to do the work, but he's the best coworker I've had on my mental health journey.
