Getting to know James McMillin

I am a licensed social worker (LSW) with a Master's in Social Work from Loyola University Chicago, where I also earned my Bachelor's degree. I have experience working with adult and adolescent clients experiencing anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, and life transitions, as well as those seeking support with relationships or family dynamics. I use a variety of techniques tailored to client needs, including psychodynamic therapy, CBT, DBT (with mindfulness and meditation), and ACT. I practice unconditional positive regard toward all clients. My work is trauma-informed, LGBTQIA+ aligned, and grounded in a feminist, anti-racist, and culturally informed framework.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I know that the decision to begin therapy, or start with a new therapist, can be intimidating. This is why my top priority is building a safe and welcoming environment in which to explore feelings, thoughts, and experiences, while building a collaborative and trusting relationship. I believe this space of trust to be the foundation to any therapeutic work. I understand that everyone is different and we don’t all need the same thing. I work to adjust my therapeutic approach to best fit client needs. Starting from client strengths, I work together with clients to empower them to develop goals and make decisions to support them.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first session will give me a chance to get to know you, including who you are as a person and why you're starting therapy. This will help us a build a treatment plan as we identify goals, current stressors and concerns, and areas for growth or change. The first few sessions will also help us build rapport and as we create a safe and trusting environment for talk therapy.
