Getting to know Jennifer Santaniello

I am a NYS Licensed and Nationally Board Certified Art Psychotherapist, an NYU Graduate Alumni and On-site Supervisor for NYU Steinhardt. I have a Master of Arts in Art Therapy from New York University. My educational training and clinical experience have focused on integrating psychotherapy, visual arts practice and engaging the creative power of art for clinical assessment and treatment. My studies promote scholarly research abilities and evidence-based interventions. I have been both a Presenter and an Events and Studio Chair Assistant for Art Therapy conferences across the United States. I am affiliated with a NY based Psychiatric Hospital where I regularly provide both individual and group Art Therapy and Psychotherapy on an inpatient unit serving children and adolescents who require a highly structured therapeutic setting. In addition, I have experience providing Art and Psychotherapy to adults with HIV/AIDS, substance abuse, as well as adults living in residential and jail settings. I am committed to providing the highest standard of quality care, and my experiences have given me a deep understanding of mental health and its impact on clients, families, and their communities. My adaptability enables me to work with clients affected by a wide range of pathologies, cross-culturally in a variety of settings. I genuinely enjoy working with all ages. My intention is to help create secure and therapeutic environments for my clients in which they are able to explore, grow and build while improving their quality of life, enabling them to live more authentically.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Art Therapy with a Client-Centered approach. Whether practicing Art Therapy, traditional talk therapy or any of the other varied therapeutic modalities, my approach is to meet you where you are with empathy and compassion while simultaneously helping to create a secure space for you to express, explore, and build. Considerable research has been completed on both Client-Centered Therapy and research is now being presented with focus on the joint and parallel process of a Client-Centered Art Therapy approach. My Client-Centered Art Therapy approach allows for freedom and encourages an individual to explore their own internal-self in their own way and in their own time. This approach provides unconditional positive regard, appreciation, as well as the absence of judgment, and can allow for the reparation of individuals suffering from a wide range of illnesses.
