“I had a fantastic experience working with John as my therapist for over a year. He approached our sessions with curiosity, openness, and a calm demeanor. I quickly felt like I could trust John and be candid with what I needed from him as a therapist through different seasons of life. I appreciated how often I left our sessions with concrete follow-ups and solutions for things I was working through in various parts of my life. Getting to know John Pitman

I provide insight oriented, trauma focused therapy by utilizing somatic and brain-body based techniques including Brainspotting which I approach with a candid, relationship-oriented style.. I prioritize working with clients to attain post-traumatic growth and create affirming meanings about their life experiences. My clients address a variety of experiences including childhood trauma, adjustment challenges, institutional trauma, attachment patterns, and grief. I operate from a social justice based lens, focusing on social conditions that can impact individual experiences. This helps reduce shame and stigma and builds a sense of togetherness.

What should a new client know about working with you?

In addition to my specialty focus on trauma work, I provide Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and mindfulness based CBT approaches for overcoming general mental health experiences like anxiety and depression. I use internal family systems themes to help clients build the essential skills of self awareness and compassion. Sessions can include focused mindfulness practices, guided recall and reprocessing of difficult experiences, and confrontation of negative beliefs of self.

More information on payments and coverage

I am an In-Network provider with Northwell Direct Tier 1 plans. We provide out-of-network billing support for reimbursement for all other clients. If we are not in-network with your plan we will work to get you significant reimbursement for the cost of your sessions. We submit claims on behalf of our patients so that you don’t have to deal with your insurance company. Here’s how works. Before you start therapy we will collect your insurance information, check your insurance benefits, provide you with an estimate of those benefits, and then allow you to make the most educated decision possible about your investment in therapy. If you decide to work with us, we will submit your insurance claims every week and give you access to the portal to check the status of the reimbursements. It is our goal to always remain transparent and to make the process of insurance reimbursements as clear as possible.

John was the first therapist I worked with, and I was really anxious about starting therapy. However, from our first consultation call, he embodied kindness and care. He is patient during sessions as you work through difficult emotions. John has a warm, calming presence that makes the space feel safe, comfortable, and trustworthy. He brings lightness and humor when needed, while still holding space for hard emotions and challenging the negative beliefs you may have. He is knowledgeable and professional. I would recommend John as a therapist—you will be blessed by his care and compassion.
John has been great to work with. He is kind, caring, and a great sense of humor. He has also done a great job in challenging me to work through difficult things in life. As a black lesbian woman I was unsure I would connect with a white male therapist, however his cultural competency and compassion has far exceeded any nervousness I had.
John made me feel comfortable and safe. He made me feel like I wasn’t dealing with everything alone, that I had someone in my corner who truly cared and would help me figure everything out. He is knowledgeable and approachable and funny. I would recommend working with him to anyone; if you’re new to therapy he is a great person to start with, and if you’re returning he will only help further your journey.
