Jonathan founded Both/And Therapy from a perspective that has shaped both his life and his clinical work. Most people live with parts of themselves that feel contradictory, unfinished, or difficult to reconcile. Growing up mixed-race and moving between multiple cultural worlds gave Jonathan an early familiarity with the experience of living between perspectives. Over time, he came to see that these tensions are not simply problems to solve. They can also become sources of insight and a way of understanding the complexity of our inner lives and relationships. His work is grounded in contemporary relational psychoanalysis and informed by trauma-sensitive and behavioral approaches. Together with clients, Jonathan explores the deeper patterns that shape how they experience themselves and others. These often include beliefs, emotional expectations, and relational habits that formed early in life and still organize the present. Therapy becomes a collaborative process of bringing those patterns into clearer view so people can move through life with greater freedom, choice, and self-understanding. Jonathan works especially well with people navigating complex identities, thoughtful and introspective clients, professionals and creatives, and those healing from relational trauma or chronic mistreatment. Many of the people he sees are trying to make sense of different parts of themselves while also wanting a clearer way forward. Jonathan is Director of Training at the National Institute for the Psychotherapies, where he teaches and supervises clinicians in psychoanalytic practice. His writing on identity and psychoanalysis has appeared in Psychoanalytic Perspectives, Psychoanalytic Inquiry, and Psychoanalysis, Self, and Context.
