“I was very impressed by how quickly I was contacted by the therepist herself after booking through Zocdoc. I was not expecting that. She called to make sure I didn’t have any questions before our appointment and to let me know there were some emails she would send my way if I had time to fill them out before the appointment. As well as confirm my co-pay amount and give me her contact information if I would need to reach out. The appointment went smoothly and I feel I have finally found a good match to help me with the perfect balance of pushing me to address issues while still keeping me in a confident and comfortable place. I am hopeful for my future growth Karen will help navigate me though. Zocdoc made it easy to find a provider that met all my criteria but more so someone who specializes in a very specific area (and one I had trouble finding in the past.) ”

Getting to know Karen Skrzypek

Hello! My name is Karen Skrzypek. I am a licensed master social worker with a Master’s in Social Work from Wayne State University. I have been a therapist for 25 years and have a passion for helping adults who are struggling with their mental health and substance use. Over the years, I have worked in many different settings, including psychiatric hospitals, partial hospital programs, detox and residential facilities, intensive outpatient programs, as well as group and individual therapy. I provide therapy for substance use issues but do not conduct one-time evaluations for court. However, I will provide letters for court if you are court-ordered for treatment and attending sessions weekly. I also offer therapy and executive function skills coaching for ADHD but do not perform testing. I can screen for and diagnose ADHD but do not prescribe medications or provide psychological testing, which is done by psychologists.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I understand how hard it can be to reach out for help. I know that this may be the first time some of you have been able to ask for help and talk about these uncomfortable feelings and possibly shameful experiences. I strive to provide a safe space for my clients to feel comfortable expressing their thoughts and feelings. My clients tell me how much better they feel after one session. I provide warm and caring conversation that will help you feel heard and understood. I want to hear your story! I don't want anyone to feel uncomfortable or that they are giving up their story to someone they don't know or don't feel they can trust. I believe in moving at a pace that is comfortable for you. Most clients tell me they feel that therapy with me is like talking to a friend while gaining insight and learning skills. I want everyone to feel comfortable talking with me and want you to know that I am LGBTQIA+ allied and welcome clients of all races and religious backgrounds.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first session is called an intake session. I will answer any questions you may have about any of the forms that you completed or anything else you might be thinking about. We will talk about why you are seeking counseling, what is going on currently and gather some medical, psychological and social history information. I will answer any questions you have about the therapy process and we will get to know each other. During our next sessions, we will set goals that you want to accomplish in our work together and start talking about what kinds of changes you would like to see happen as a result of counseling.
