Getting to know Kelley Smith

!!! I ONLY PROVIDE THERAPY TO CLIENTS WHO LIVE IN VIRGINIA (ONLINE AND IN-PERSON) AND WASHINGTON DC (ONLINE ONLY) !!! Do you believe in a holistic approach to wellness—one that empowers you to realize your personal goals and strengths in order to live a more fulfilled life? I do. My name is Kelley Smith, and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) in the state of Virginia and Washington DC. I bring extensive experience working with children (9 years old and older), adolescents, young adults, and families in both community mental health and private practice settings. I use biofeedback equipment with clients to teach how to use emotions to renew energy levels and how mindfulness skills improve nervous system functioning, physical, electrical, and chemical responses. My clinical expertise includes the treatment of trauma, anxiety disorders, depression, behavioral challenges, mood disorders, emotional dysregulation, and family relational difficulties. I believe that physical, mental, and emotional symptoms often signal a deeper imbalance. Through a compassionate, person-centered approach, I provide a safe, respectful space where you can explore your challenges, gain insight, and discover your inner strengths. Together, we will work to foster greater self-awareness and promote healing and growth.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My therapeutic approach is trauma-informed and tailored to meet the unique needs of each individual. I integrate a variety of evidence-based modalities, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Motivational Interviewing (MI), Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT). When appropriate, I also incorporate play therapy techniques and somatic interventions to support emotional expression, regulation, and mind-body connection. This integrative approach allows for flexibility and responsiveness in treatment, ensuring that care is compassionate, effective, and aligned with your goals for healing and personal growth.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I strive to create a supportive and secure environment, especially for individuals and families who are new to counseling. I understand that beginning therapy is a meaningful and sometimes challenging step, which is why I focus on building a strong therapeutic alliance from the start. Using evidence-based modalities, I take a collaborative approach that encourages active engagement and open dialogue throughout the treatment process. Sessions include psychoeducation to support your understanding and involvement in your own growth. Rooted in a holistic perspective, my approach emphasizes balance and personal empowerment. My goal is to equip you with practical tools and insights that promote safety, foster positive change, and enhance self-awareness—paving the way toward lasting well-being.
