Latonia Staten, LCPC

Psychotherapist
MD
Carael Group, LLC was established in 2017 by Latonia Staten, LCPC, CAC-AD who is founder and owner. Mrs. Staten surveyed the availability of mental health services in the Maryland area and noticed that Montgomery County, Maryland, in particular, had a shortage in mental healthcare and not enough training opportunities for new developing counselors. After being a counselor for over 25 years, Mrs. Staten realized the importance of training the next generation of counselors. She secured the Maryland Board Supervisor credential and redesigned her business by adding supervision as a services offering. Thus, creating an opportunity for fellow counselors to develop their skills and introduce them to some of the indirect and direct counseling opportunities that may not have been discussed while in graduate school. Mrs. Staten began her counseling career as a certified substance abuse counselor in the State of Maryland while pursuing a second degree in BioPsychology from the University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). Several years after graduating UMBC, Mrs. Staten enrolled in the Counseling Program at Argosy University where she graduated with honors and became a member of Chi Sigma Iota. Mrs. Staten holds three degrees in the following areas: Biotechnology, BioPsychology, and Counseling. Additionally, she has several certifications in areas such as: suicide prevention, Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Brief Therapy, Acceptance Commitment Therapy, smoking cessation training, psychopharmacology, anxiety and neurobiology, and other certifications. When not in a classroom increasing her education, Mrs. Staten volunteers with a veteran and schizophrenia organization, plays with her furry “son” Milo, works on real estate projects and goes on wondrous adventures with her wife and two teenage children.

What should a new client know about working with you?

When a patient talks with me, I don't expect them to know everything about their issue, if they did they would not seek therapy. I expect the patient to come willing to try this process, even if they are experienced with therapy. In our session, I expect you and I to grow and experience your challenges together. Believe me, this is no easy feat because opening up to someone you just met is hard. But I make it easy. I create an environment that makes you feel like we are old friends just catching up on what is happening with you. I expect my patients to come willing to be vulnerable. NO, not at the first session, but eventually you will be able to have those hard discussions. I expect my patients to be ready, willing, and able to make changes in their lives by being open to this process. I require my patients to try to understand that their concerns and healing do not happen over night, it takes time. Just like it was time that caused your trauma, time to become broken and torn down....it takes time to repair your brokeness and heal you so that your past no longer affects your present so that you can move into the future a changed person. I do not guarantee instant change.
