Therapy can be a powerful space for understanding the patterns, experiences, and relationships that shape emotional well-being. A particular passion is supporting women navigating trauma, anxiety, relationship concerns, self-esteem, boundaries, life transitions, and the pressure of carrying multiple roles. Clinical work is grounded in a warm, compassionate, and integrative approach, with attention to attachment, core beliefs, emotional patterns, nervous system responses, and the ways past experiences can continue to influence the present. Evidence-based approaches may include CBT, ACT, Schema Therapy, mindfulness, motivational interviewing, trauma-focused care, and somatic strategies. The focus is not simply on reducing symptoms, but on helping clients better understand themselves, build confidence, strengthen boundaries, develop healthier relationship patterns, and create meaningful lasting change.

Getting to know Laura Smalt

What should a new client know about working with you?

A supportive, nonjudgemental environment is central to the work. Therapy is collaborative rather than one-size-fits-all, with space to talk openly while also developing practical tools that can be used outside of sessions. The approach is warm, direct, and grounded in helping clients understand the connection between thoughts, emotions, relationships, past experiences, and nervous system responses. Psychoeducation is often used to make complication emotional patterns easier to understand and to reduce the shame that can come with anxiety, trauma responses, or long-standing relationship patterns. Clients can expect therapy to balance insight with action. Sessions may include exploring core beliefs, identifying patterns, strengthening boundaries, learning coping and regulation skills, and practicing new ways of responding to difficult situations. The goal is to create a space where clients feel heard while also gaining practical strategies, greater self-understanding, and confidence in making meaningful changes.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Sessions are collaborative, conversational, and tailored to what feels most important in the moment while still keeping sight of longer-term goals. The first few sessions focus on understanding current concerns, important relationships, past experiences, strengths, and patterns that may be contributing to distress. From there, therapy may explore core beliefs, attachment patterns, emotional responses, boundaries, and the connection between thoughts, feelings, behaviors, and nervous system reactions. Practical strategies are introduced as needed, with space for reflection, psychoeducation, skill-building, and processing. Sessions are not designed to feel rigid or overly critical. The process is individualized and may shift as needs change, with an emphasis on helping clients gain insight, build healthier patterns, and develop tools that feel realistic and useful in everyday life.
