Getting to know Lori Brinkley

Hi. My name is Lori Brinkley. I’ve lived in Wilmington for over 30 years and I love it here. I’m a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with 23 years of experience treating trauma/abuse, depression/anxiety, post partum adjustment issues. anxious college students, adult children of alcoholics, co-dependency, parenting and co-parenting after divorce, boundaries, women going through divorce transition, "sandwich" generation (those caring for their children while caring for an aging parent, and busy professionals struggling with balance. I do a unique thing called "Couple's Counseling for One" - when one partner isn't ready, willing or doesn't believe in therapy I meet with the willing participant to help them learn new tools, coping skills or boundaries to implement in their relationship with the goal of improving communication and connection. My approach is warm and nurturing, yet direct and infused with confrontation, as needed. I believe it is imperative to challenge patterns and make difficult connections but I know you can only push as much as you support! Humor is infused into our sessions, as it's a huge part of my personality and it helps make therapy fun (and I believe therapy can be fun). I am an advanced generalist who uses a variety of tools relying heavily on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, mindfulness, strengths and problem solving. I am a mom of two college kids (yikes when did that happen). I spend my time doing anything outdoors, especially the beach - nature is such a healing and calming force in my life. I love to read a good suspense book or watch a character driven movie. Life is short. It is filled with beauty and stress and joy and devastation and then some. Perspective is key, but we can only explore other perspectives once true understanding and validation have happened. I hope you will reach out so we can work together to reach your unique goals and cultivate more joy in your life!

What should a new client know about working with you?

Hi everyone! I think one thing that people should know about working with me is that I am very direct. I share, openly, the patterns that I notice and ways that we can begin to make the changes that move you in the direction you want. I never want a client to substitute my reality for their own - so therapy will be highly collaborative. The most sustainable changes happen slowly, over time. We will work together to set small goals that move you closer to the larger objective, Homework is a regular part of our work together and you will leave with an idea of what to practice between our sessions so we can talk about which tools worked and did not work for you and adjust accordingly! I consider it an honor that people let me in so closely and reveal so much to me. It is not lost on me how much vulnerability and trust is necessary to do the hard work we will do together. I strive to create safety and warmth and trust that is necessary to make all of this transformation happen! I look forward to meeting you!

What is your typical process for working with clients?

When you book an appointment with me, you can expect a prompt confirmation. This will be followed by a welcome email from me - to start a dialogue about our appointment if you have any questions. Following the welcome email you will receive a link to set up your client portal in my client management system. This is a self explanatory and easily navigated process - so no need to fret about technology (if that is something you struggle with)! During our first appointment, we will discuss the rules and boundaries of our work together. We will discuss confidentiality and the therapeutic process. You will have space to ask any questions you'd like answered! This first session is filled with questions from me, so I can get a good picture of you and your history. We will work together to set two or three goals and break them down into a manageable action step each session so you can take them out into the world and practice! Thank you for taking the time to check out my page and what I have to offer. I look forward to meeting you, if you think we would be a good fit!
