Lori Close, LCSW

Psychotherapist
MD
I have been in the mental health field for 25 years, working in a variety of treatment settings with diverse populations. My journey started with wilderness programming for adolescents, where I saw firsthand how nature and challenge could create powerful change. From there, I worked in residential treatment programs for at-risk youth, including those with severe behavioral issues and adolescent sexual offenders. I also spent time providing substance use treatment for both adolescents and adults in detention facilities. Since 2016, I’ve focused on the intersection of mental health and addiction, recognizing how deeply connected the two are and how important it is to treat them together. I specialize in addiction of all kinds, depression, anxiety, PTSD, and some personality disorders. My passion lies in working with adolescents (ages 14–18) and adults, helping them navigate their struggles with honesty, support, and real solutions. I take an eclectic approach to therapy, incorporating Person-Centered Therapy, Solution-Focused Therapy, CBT, DBT, and Mindfulness. I also use creative methods like sand tray and art therapy because I know that healing doesn’t always come through words alone. Over the years, I’ve worked with a wide range of individuals, including LGBTQ+ clients and deaf clients, and have experience developing and leading therapy groups. I earned my bachelor’s degree in Psychology and Sociology from Frostburg State University in 2000 and went on to complete my Master of Social Work at Salisbury University in 2011. I became an LGSW that same year and earned my LCSW-C in 2014. At my core, I believe in the importance of balance—body, mind, and soul. To live a healthy, fulfilling life, all three need to be nurtured. My approach is straightforward: I don’t sugarcoat things, and I don’t beat around the bush. What you see is what you get. I got into this field to help people, and that’s exactly what I intend to do.
