Getting to know Lucy Newburn

Lucy is a licensed professional counselor and psychotherapist in Chicago, IL specializing in body image concerns, disordered eating, anxiety, depression, and life transitions. With lived eating disorder experience, Lucy understands the unique impact of diet culture on our relationships to food and our own bodies and is passionate about dismantling the systems that uphold these insidious ideals. With a background at inpatient and PHP/IOP levels of care, Lucy has worked with diverse populations and welcomes individuals of all backgrounds and identities into the therapeutic space. Her clinical approach is defined by warmth, nonjudgement, and a touch of humor to create a safe space of growth and reflection for individuals of all ages. As a Health At Every Size informed clinician, Lucy takes a weight-inclusive, anti-diet approach to wellness and is committed to walking alongside her clients on their path to self-acceptance, working with them to gain insight and confidence with each step. She believes in a holistic approach that addresses the impacts of external forces of oppression including weight-bias, racism, sexism, abilism, ageism, and more in order to validate her client’s adaptive responses to a pathological culture.

What should a new client know about working with you?

When you work with me, you can expect a space that’s affirming, nonjudgmental, and collaborative. I believe therapy is most effective when you feel safe enough to be your full self — and I work hard to build that kind of environment together with you. My style is warm, down-to-earth, and guided by curiosity, respect, and a touch of humor. I draw from approaches like DBT, ACT, and person-centered therapy, tailoring our work to your needs and goals. As someone with lived experience around body image and disordered eating, I understand how complex our relationships with food, movement, and identity can be. I'm here to help you explore those complexities, challenge harmful cultural messages, and build a more compassionate relationship with yourself — one step at a time.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My typical process for working with clients begins with a free discovery call. This is a chance for us to connect, talk about what you're hoping to get out of therapy, and see if we’re a good fit. If we decide to move forward, our first few sessions will focus on getting to know you — your story, your values, and what feels most important right now. Together, we’ll identify your goals and create a plan that fits your needs, using approaches like Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and person-centered care. I strive to offer a warm, affirming space where you can feel seen, supported, and empowered to explore at your own pace.

Lucy brings so much to our sessions. She's helped me make changes sooner than I expected. Working with her has been great!
Thanks Lucy, for all your help and support! Working with you has made such a difference and I'm truly grateful.
I’ve grown more in a few months than I expected to in a year. Truly grateful to be working with Lucy.
Therapy isn’t something I’d usually call fun, but I’ve honestly really enjoyed working with Lucy!
Lucy has been very supportive while I'm working through all the struggles in my life. She's provided me with what feels like endless resources for outside our sessions and grounded guidance in our sessions.
Working with Lucy has helped me feel more at home in my body than I have in years. We’ve explored where my body image struggles come from and how deeply they’ve shaped the way I show up in my life. I leave every session feeling lighter, more grounded, and more connected to myself.
Lucy has a calm, grounded presence that immediately put my daughter at ease. She approaches each session with genuine care and insight, and my daughter has grown more open and reflective since starting therapy. What stands out most is how Lucy includes the whole picture—she sees beyond just symptoms and really supports the person as a whole. Our family has felt more connected and hopeful since she became part of our team.
Lucy is the therapist I didn’t know I needed. I came in feeling stuck in cycles of anxiety and low self-worth, and she helped me start untangling them in a way that felt doable. Her creativity has been helpful in changing the ways I tackle my day to day struggles.
My time with Lucy has made space for healing I wasn’t sure was possible. She has helped me slow down, check in with myself, and figure out what I actually needed. And this has changed the way I "feed" and care for myself!
Lucy has a way of making hard conversations feel manageable. I came in unsure of how to even begin unpacking years of anxiety and shame around food, and she met me with such calm and care. She listens, asks thoughtful questions, and gently helps me challenge things I’ve held onto for too long. Thanks Lucy!
As a queer person in recovery from disordered eating, it’s hard to find providers who feel truly affirming. Lucy is one of those rare people who doesn't judge. She meet me with curiosity and respect. I’ve made so much progress with her support, and I actually look forward to our sessions.
Lucy, thank you so much for all your support! Your personality is always so bright and positive! Everything has has ever happened you always had great advice! I will forever think of you when I need "tummy time." Keep being you and you make an amazing therapist!
Lucy is always great and makes me feel better.
Working with Lucy has helped me get out of my head and start showing up more fully in my life. She creates a space where I can be honest without feeling like I need to explain or defend myself. Therapy with her has been a mix of real talk, reflection, and actually useful tools — and it’s helped me feel way more grounded in my 20s.
I started seeing Lucy during a time when I felt completely unsure of who I was or what I wanted. I was open that I felt lost and she made it feel okay to not have all the answers. Our sessions have helped me build more trust in myself and figure out what actually matters to me — not just what I think I’m supposed to be doing. She’s easy to talk to and genuinely cares.
Lucy has this calm, grounded energy that makes opening up feel way less scary. I’ve talked with her about anxiety, relationships, body image, and figuring out who I am in all of it — and she meets everything with patience and understanding. I always leave feeling a little more clear and a lot more supported.
Lucy has been an incredibly supportive therapist for my daughter as she navigates recovery through her eating struggles. From the beginning, she created a space where my daughter feels heard, and understood — something that’s made a huge difference in her willingness to engage in the process. As a parent, I deeply appreciate Lucy’s thoughtful, steady presence and her ability to connect in a way that feels both respectful and genuinely caring.
Lucy has helped me build trust in myself again. She's been a necessary member of my treatment team and is working with me through the step down process Thanks Lucy!
I felt really validated in situations I wasn’t sure how to talk about, and that made a big difference in how comfortable I felt opening up. Lucy was warm, attentive, and professional throughout the appointment, and I left feeling confident that I’m in the right place. I’m definitely looking forward to continuing.
Therapy with Lucy has been a space where I feel like I can finally show up fully bringing all my parts. She holds space in a way that makes it feel okay to not have all the answers. I’ve been working on things like setting boundaries, reconnecting with my values, and unlearning perfectionism, and Lucy has walked with me through all of it with kindness and curiosity. What I appreciate most is that Lucy really listens to what I need in the moment, whether it’s a grounding exercise, a different perspective, or just a space to talk through something that’s been weighing on me. Over time, I’ve started to notice small but powerful changes — I’m speaking up more, trusting myself more, and slowly feeling more comfortable in my own skin. I can’t recommend Lucy enough for anyone looking for a therapist who brings real heart, strong clinical skills, and a genuine sense of presence into the room.
Working with Lucy has been one of the most meaningful parts of my healing process. I originally came in for support with disordered eating, but what I’ve found through our work together goes far beyond that. Lucy has helped me explore how so many parts of my life — identity, relationships, anxiety, body image — are interconnected. What stands out about Lucy is how deeply present she is. She shows up with real attention and care. She brings in helpful tools and frameworks when I need them, but she also knows when to slow down and just be with whatever I’m going through. Our sessions are a mix of reflection, laughter, honesty, and quiet moments that somehow always lead to clarity. I’ve not only built a more peaceful relationship with food, but also with myself. Lucy has been such a steady presence through it all, and I feel incredibly lucky to be working with her.
Working with Lucy has been such an important part of my eating disorder recovery. Our sessions feel supportive and honest — a space where I can bring whatever is coming up without needing to filter or explain it away. Lucy really understands the nuances of disordered eating and how it’s connected to so many other parts of life. She offers reflections that help me connect dots I hadn’t seen before and helps me stay grounded through the ups and downs of recovery. I’ve been able to challenge old patterns and start creating a relationship with food and my body that feels more flexible, compassionate, and sustainable. I always leave our sessions feeling more connected to myself and more capable of continuing this work.
My daughter has been working with Lucy and the growth we’ve seen has been incredible. Lucy brings such a calm, supportive presence that my daughter really connects with, and she’s been able to open up in ways she never has before. It’s clear that Lucy truly understands eating disorder recovery and approaches it with compassion and expertise. As a parent, I feel so grateful knowing my daughter has someone like her in her corner.
I started therapy with Lucy during a time when everything felt kind of stuck — I was constantly anxious, second-guessing myself, and feeling disconnected from my body. From our first meeting, I felt like I could exhale. Lucy is warm and insightful, and she has this way of asking questions that gently push you to think more deeply. We’ve talked about things I’ve never said out loud before, and not once have I felt uncomfortable or dismissed. I’ve laughed in session, cried in session, sat in silence when I needed to — and Lucy has met all of it with compassion and calm. One of the biggest shifts I’ve experienced since starting therapy is learning how to be kinder to myself, especially in the way I relate to my body and emotions. I still have hard days, but I feel more resourced now. More aware. And more capable of handling what comes up. I’m so grateful for the space Lucy creates and the way she shows up in it.
It’s hard for me to feel understood by most therapists, but Lucy just got it. She met me with patience, broke things down in ways that worked for my brain, and never made me feel like I had to “fix” who I am. If you’re neurodivergent and looking for someone who really listens, Lucy is it.
Lucy is the first therapist I’ve worked with who didn’t focus on weight or make food the enemy. She helped me untangle so much of the shame I’ve carried and reminded me I’m allowed to take up space. Her insight, patience, and occasional humor made me feel like I wasn’t alone in this.
I started seeing Lucy during a tough transition in my life — new city, new job, and a lot of anxiety. She never made me feel silly for the things that were hard for me. Every session felt like a mix of comfort and clarity. I always left feeling lighter, more in control, and like I had options.
When I started working with Lucy, I was going through a breakup and a career change — everything felt unstable. She gave me space to process all of it and helped me reconnect with what actually matters to me. Her sessions are grounded, thoughtful, and surprisingly empowering.
Lucy helped me get out of the constant cycle of body obsession and guilt around food. She sees the big picture and sees all of me. I feel more like myself now than I have in years.
My teenager sees Lucy for support with anxiety and body image, and we’ve seen such a positive shift. My child looks forward to sessions and often brings things home that spark meaningful conversations. Lucy brings just the right balance of professionalism and warmth.
