Getting to know Mackenzie Grosse

Mackenzie Grosse holds a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling from Baruch College and a Bachelor’s degree in Musical Theatre with a minor in English Literature from Oakland University. She has experience supporting individuals navigating identity exploration, attachment difficulties, emotional regulation, and interpersonal trauma. Drawing from her background in the performing arts, Mackenzie brings curiosity, adaptability, and a sense of play into the therapeutic space. She believes in the power of a healing relationship where therapist and client work together to explore experiences, create meaning, and develop a deeper understanding of the self.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Many people come to therapy feeling like a mismatch with their environment. Perhaps they have felt “too sensitive,” different from those around them, or as though they don’t quite belong. Therapy with me is a space to explore the relationship between who you are and the environments that have shaped you. Together, we’ll examine the stories you’ve learned about who you are “supposed” to be while exploring a more compassionate and authentic understanding of yourself. I work very collaboratively, inviting feedback about your experience in sessions. I take a relational approach, which means I believe we are shaped through our connections with others. Because of that, I'll check in about what's happening between us: When do you feel compelled to share? When might it be harder? How can we understand this together? Above all else, I want to know what it is like to be you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We'll move at a pace that feels right for you, with our sessions centered around what feels most important in your life. Rather than jumping straight into coping skills or techniques, I like to first get to know you—your experiences, your relationships, and what coping already looks like for you. From there, I draw from approaches like mindfulness, DBT, and narrative therapy, adapting them to fit your unique needs and identities rather than expecting you to fit into a particular model. Over time, therapy becomes a space where we can be honest and direct with each other. Sometimes the patterns that show up in our work together can offer valuable insight into how you relate to yourself and others in your everyday life. While we'll absolutely work on helping you feel better, my hope is that our work goes beyond symptom relief. Together, we'll explore who you are and how you can make choices that feel more connected to the person you want to be.
