Marisa Markowitz, LCSW

Psychotherapist
NY
As a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW), I bring a deep commitment to offering personalized, evidence-based, and compassionate care that meets individuals where they are—and supports them in becoming where they want to be. I believe that therapy should never be “one size fits all.” Just as each person is unique, so too should be their therapeutic experience. I specialize in using Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR), and I tailor every session to reflect your individual goals, needs, identity, and lived experience. A Collaborative, Hands-On Approach to Healing From the moment we begin working together, you can expect a therapeutic relationship that is collaborative, warm, and highly engaged. I don’t take a passive approach to therapy. I am hands-on, meaning we’ll actively work together to identify what’s working, what isn’t, and what needs to change. Whether you're seeking support for anxiety, depression, trauma, relationship struggles, identity exploration, or life transitions, I’ll help you navigate through with clarity, skills, and insight. My role as your therapist is not to simply listen, but to guide, challenge, support, and empower you. I strive to create a therapeutic environment that fosters trust, safety, and non-judgment, so you feel both supported and stretched toward growth. Our work is a partnership. I value your voice in every session, and we’ll regularly check in on your progress, adjusting interventions to keep therapy meaningful, effective, and aligned with your goals. I believe in individualized care, not formulaic treatment. I start by getting to know you: your background, your challenges, your strengths, and your goals. From there, I customize interventions to meet your needs, preferences, and learning style.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Therapy That’s Tailored for You I believe in individualized care, not formulaic treatment. I start by getting to know you: your background, your challenges, your strengths, and your goals. From there, I customize interventions to meet your needs, preferences, and learning style. If you're analytical and prefer practical strategies, CBT may be our main focus. If you're navigating emotional dysregulation or interpersonal turmoil, we might integrate DBT skills. If trauma is central to your experience, EMDR may be an effective avenue for processing and healing. The therapy we do together isn’t just about “talking through” problems—it’s about building new skills, shifting perspectives, and fostering behavioral change that supports real-life improvements. I’ll help you connect the dots between your thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, while also equipping you with tools you can use outside of our sessions. Focused on Real Progress and Measurable Goals Therapy is about more than just reflection—it’s about transformation. I use goal-oriented strategies that keep us grounded in your desired outcomes. Whether your goal is to reduce panic attacks, communicate more effectively with your partner, set healthier boundaries, or heal from childhood trauma, we will develop clear objectives and regularly track your progress. You’ll leave sessions not only feeling heard and supported, but also with tangible takeaways—skills, strategies, insights, and shifts that you can apply in your day-to-day life. We’ll celebrate your wins, troubleshoot setbacks, and keep evolving our approach to ensure you continue to make progress in the areas that matter most to you.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In our sessions, the focus is always on you—your experiences, your goals, and your path toward healing and growth. From the very first meeting, we’ll begin building a collaborative, supportive relationship rooted in trust, transparency, and mutual respect. A typical session starts with checking in: What’s been on your mind? What’s been working—or not working—since our last session? I want to understand not only your current emotional state but also how you’ve been applying any tools or insights from our previous work. Early in our work together, we’ll focus on clarifying your goals. You don’t need to have it all figured out before starting therapy—that’s what we’ll do together. Whether your goals are specific (like reducing panic attacks, improving sleep, or managing anger), or more open-ended (such as gaining clarity about your identity, healing from trauma, or improving relationships), we’ll explore what matters most to you and begin shaping a roadmap for our work. Each session typically includes time to: Reflect on recent experiences or emotions Learn and practice a new coping skill or strategy Explore underlying beliefs or past experiences Check in on your progress toward goals We will regularly revisit your goals, track your progress, and adjust our approach as needed. I want therapy to feel relevant, practical, and effective—something you can carry with you into your daily life, not just the therapy room. You can expect a space that’s nonjudgmental, affirming, and interactive. My goal is to help you feel seen, understood, and empowered to create meaningful change in your life. I use evidence-based approaches, including CBT, DBT, and EMDR, to guide the therapeutic process. Sessions are active and structured, but always tailored to your pace and comfort level. We may identify unhelpful thought patterns, learn emotion regulation skills, process past trauma, or role-play difficult conversations—all depending on your unique needs.
