Getting to know Marja Booker

I am a licensed professional counselor with over 40 years of clinical practice. I have developed a strong commitment to helping those who suffer, particularly victims of intimate partner violence, sexual assault, and general crime. I have also been deeply involved with child witnesses of abuse and individuals who have experienced childhood traumas. I earned my Master’s in Clinical Psychology from the University of Helsinki, which has enriched my clinical approach. Throughout my career, I have devoted myself to helping women and children heal. I utilize talk therapy, play, and art in my work, and I am trained in EMDR. Fluent in Spanish, my studies of Latin American cultures provide me with unique expertise and understanding of clients from those regions.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I have a client-centered and trauma-informed approach. With younger children, I work in a play setting. With adults, I may include information about concrete options to end victimization, provide support, and process traumatic experinces. I try to tailor my counseling to the needs of each individual.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I start with a thorough assessment of the problem. This may involve the completion of symptom-related surveys and discussion of treatment options. Initial sessions would focus on getting to know the client and her longer-term needs and then moving onto the treatment itself.
