I could have just called a friend to vent, she was distracted and generally unhelpful as far as counseling goes.

Disappointing experience. Unfortunately, I did not find this therapist to be helpful or engaged during our sessions. The interaction felt passive, with little meaningful feedback or guidance offered. Most of the time was spent in silence or receiving vague, unhelpful responses. At the end of each session, I was handed a generic journal prompt, which felt impersonal and ineffective. Overall, I left feeling more frustrated than supported.

I just had my first session, and she was professional, then at the end of the session she said something that resonated with me to my core, which we will need to look into further.
I think Mary May be a good fit for patients who are dealing with extreme trauma or for patients who aren’t sure what their problems are. However, as someone who is self-aware and came to therapy with identified issues she was not very helpful for me. She self admitted that she doesn’t take notes for sessions because she remembers everything about her patients (hard to believe because she couldn’t even remember the 4 issues I wanted to discuss) and that she is winging it when it comes to treatment. Overall I can’t say that I would recommend her to family or friends.
I gave Mary a few tries before I decided she wasn’t for me. Overall, she was attentive and gave good advice (except for assigning me a book to read that was 30 years out of date and which she hadn’t actually ever read) but she seemed stuck on some of my particulars. She seemed interested in “fixing” me and making me straight and belittled my romantic relationship because it wasn’t a sexual one. She actually told me my breakup would be smooth because we were basically “just friends” anyway. Her grasp of LGBTQIA theory from the last 20-30 years is pretty shaky and I wouldn’t recommend anyone from those categories of people go see her.

Right of the bat, you can tell she cares. It's clear that she likes what she's doing when she works with you. She's somewhat attentive, chimes in once in a while, and proves that she's receptive to your words. She tends to be flexible and understanding, this is what kept me coming back. However, that's it for the pros. The cons were a bit too heavy for me to bear. She doesn't actually dispense advice which made me uncomfortable to the point of choosing not to return. She "...gives you the necessary tools to solve your own problems". I found this to be a very impersonal way of counseling and didn't really meet my goals. I didn't go home with any more insight than what I could grab from a book. She doesn't share her feelings as much and tries too hard to focus on me which makes the whole conversation kind of forced & one-sided. In the end, it felt like I spent 50 minutes venting to a college counselor who didn't mind being there but had other things to do as evidenced by her tendency to multi-task during our appointment (eating, being on her laptop a lot) which I'm okay with if we're actually having a conversation. It felt very methodical and I didn't leave the office with the same levity I felt with my past counselor.
I liked that she talked to respectful adult and sincerely understood what I was saying. It was only the first appointment but I did feel better after I left her office. I also like that her office environment is warm and welcoming.

Awesome! Thanks!
My first visit with Mary was great. She's very friendly, caring and gave me more than enough time to say everything I wanted to say. I look forward to working with her again soon. I think I've finally found a therapist I'm going to be able to stick with for a long time.

AWFUL! I would never recommend Mary J. Rodman to any living human! She pretty much stared at me the entire time and was no help at all. She asked me questions, and immediately forgot what I said once I answered. She yawned the entire time without covering her mouth or even saying excuse me. She asked me questions that didn’t even pertain to why I was there... nor did she pay attention to the answer. We spent more time in silence staring at each other than than actually talking. Honestly, at 17 minutes into the session, I contemplated telling her I had to leave because I had an emergency. I would never ever recommend her.

I didnt like the fact that she was texting ok n her phone as soon as the initial visit started saying she could multi-task ... especially with a psychotherapist ... just common courtesy if nothing else that you make eye contact!
I've never been to a therapist before. Mary was wonderful and made me feel comfortable speaking with her. I'd highly recommend her if you need a good therapist. She listens and cares.

Mary has been super helpful to me! She’s sweet and easy to open up to, and has been a great resource for my first experience with therapy. I really enjoy the support I’ve been getting through our time together!
Mary was understanding while also giving me the push I needed towards self-care. This was my first time seeing a therapist, and I will definitely go back.

At first glance, I was worried if this office could help me because it seemed very nutritional-based. But Ms. Rodman is actually quite amazing! Great listener, and very perceptive.
