Congrats on seeking therapy. It can be hard-great job! I hope you find just the right match for you. Here are some details to see if it might be me. I am a person-centered therapist, meaning my therapeutic methods are based on a trusting relationship and techniques responsive to your specific needs. I am also a Play Therapist. Thinking, "Isn't that just for kids?" Fair, but nope! I believe-and research supports-that everyone can benefit from playful expression and finding ways to express themselves that are comfortable and joy-filled. With adults, that often looks like games, storytelling, art, or other creative expressions-but always only when you are comfortable. I hold a Master's in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Marymount University and a Juris Doctor from Regent University, which enriches my understanding of the complexities people face.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Hi there, Congrats on considering therapy. It can be a hard first step. Welcome! I hope you find someone who is just the right match for you. Here's a little info about me to see if we might be a fit. My name is Megan and I am a Licensed Professional Counselor in Maryland. I am a client-centered therapist meaning I want the focus of therapy to be on you and what meets your needs. I am also a Play Therapist. Are you thinking: "Isn't that just for kids?" It's a fair question. Nope. I'm here to tell you that I believe and the research supports that everyone can benefit from playful expression and finding ways to express themself that are comfortable and joyfilled. It doesn't mean therapy will be all fun and games - it can be hard work, but I believe that finding ways to do it through art, humor, play, drama, creativity, and joyful movement can be healing and helpful. I also have a strong belief in mindfulness and soothing our physiology to help support our mentality. I have worked with clients on a variety of goals including supporting anxiety or depression, managing home and workplace stressors, improving parenting, processing childhood trauma, processing experiences of foster care, adoption, and other concerns of changed or changing family structures, and working towards more fulfilling career goals. My goal is create a peaceful, productive environment that puts you at ease in order to do your best healing and growth. I want to use my knowledge of mental health, sense of humor, truth-telling, productivity, and realism to help you change your life for the better.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My guess is that now you're wondering, how does this therapy thing work, so here goes... Here are some quick examples about how therapy with me often goes in the first few interactions: I'll ask some simple questions to get to know you and work out how we can work together. They might include: - What do you want me to know about you and your life so far? - Who are the most important people in your life and how do they affect you? - How do you spend your time each day? - How do you wish you spent your time? - What was your favorite thing to do as a kid? - What made you think therapy would be helpful now? - What problems can we try to solve together? - What have you tried before that helps? - What hasn't helped? Then, we'll set some goals together and I'll use my skills and resources to help you work towards them. It might include helping you set professional, personal, or self-care goals, managing stress, learning communication skills, setting healthy boundaries, processing and integrating past experiences or traumas, or personal exploration that results in better self understanding. I believe joyful engagement benefits all of us. Research says we learn and adapt better when we are relaxed and enjoying ourselves. I think that means play and positivity can be great ways to do serious work. In all of this, my goal is that it be the least work and the most enjoyable it can. That's not to say it won't be work at times, but when it can be enjoyable, I strive for that.
