Melissa South, LCSW

Melissa South, LCSW

Psychotherapist
VA
I work with individuals to reduce toxic stress, heal from trauma, and build practical tools for lasting emotional stability and healthier relationships. My approach is trauma-informed and evidence-based, while remaining open to spirituality, personal meaning, and deeper self-awareness. I attend closely to the effects of systemic stress, social justice issues, and inequity on mental health, recognizing how broader forces shape individual and family well-being. I am trained in grief work and provide grounded, compassionate support through loss, life transitions, and complex bereavement. My work centers on nervous system regulation, emotional safety, and strengthening relationships, helping individuals break cycles of chronic stress and reconnect with purpose, agency, and connection in daily life. I use the CBT model, integrating DBT concepts. I am EMDR trained, ACT trained, a member of the Association for Contextual Behavioral Science (ACBS), and certified as a Trauma and Resilience Therapist through the VA-NASW. With over 15 years of experience working with parents and families, I use an ecosystemic family therapy model to support complex parenting challenges. This includes collaboration with schools, courts, social services, and other systems that can contribute to toxic stress. I also support parents navigating the transition of launching adult children from the home when entrenched dynamics create barriers to a healthy living environment. I have experience working with older adult as they navigate health issues and challenges with their independent living.
