“Micheal Braverman will help you navigate through whatever issues you are facing in your personal journey. He does so with an empathetic approach and radical acceptance. As my first time seeking aid from a therapist, he helped me not only understand the nature of some issues I've struggled with but more importantly, drives home how some of these issues can resurface in life. However, this time around you will be equipped with the tools and strategy to help to overcome them. Understanding is the first step. ”

“Dr Braverman helped me with a lot of issues I was going through in a short amount of time. Over a 2-month period we were able to break down everything I was going through, find solutions to improve these situations and implement healthier behaviors into my life. He was not only extremely friendly and non-judgmental but he was also an incredible listener who gave great advice and suggestions. I was able to stop seeing Dr. Braverman after a short amount of time because he helped me quickly and efficiently. Very down to earth. Will definitely see see him again when something in my life comes up that I need professional non-bias advice on. ”

Getting to know Michael Braverman

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker, with over 15 years of experience. I completed my undergraduate degree in psychology at NYU, and completed my Master’s Degree at NYU's Silver School of Social Work. I receive ongoing postgraduate training and supervision at the Beck Institute, the birthplace of Cognitive Behavior Therapy. I did my graduate fieldwork with people with AIDS and with at-risk adolescents. I spent the first 12 years of my career working in New York City's struggling mental health system, and experienced firsthand the challenges so many New Yorkers face getting the help they need. I worked on inpatient psychiatric units at several of New York City’s hospitals, providing therapy, advocacy, linkage and discharge planning services. I also worked at a residence for young adults aging out of the foster care system, most of whom struggled with mental health difficulties, substance abuse and complex trauma. I spent several years working at a community mental health clinic in Queens, working with clients from a variety of backgrounds. I started my private practice in the Fall of 2019, and saw firsthand the escalation of the mental health crisis with the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic. I worked with people on a sliding scale, and did pro bono work to ensure access to care during this challenging time. My social work background gives me a sense of obligation to make myself as available as is possible. I pride myself on my dedication to ongoing training and supervision in an evidence-based approach to psychotherapy. This is a challenging and constantly-evolving field. Regardless of whether or not you choose me as your therapist, make sure you ask any prospective therapist about their ongoing training. I am an LGBTQ+ affirming provider and am committed to do work toward racial justice in any way I am able. Finally, I am a Native New Yorker, and I understand the challenges of city living more than most.

What should a new client know about working with you?

The type of therapy I practice, (Cognitive Behavior Therapy or CBT,) requires you to do homework between sessions in order for it to be helpful. Homework might be as simple as reviewing your therapy notes, to keep new concepts in mind. It might involve facing some of your fears, which is called exposure. Or it may involve practicing an emotional management technique you learned in our session. While we may discuss the origins of the difficulties you are having, the core of our work together will involve decreasing the suffering you experience today. If we determine that you are reacting to something that happened in your distant path, we may come up with a way of recognizing when you are doing this and an alternative response you can use that better fits the current situation. It matters how you came to this point, but we're here to initiate change. *NOTE: I REQUIRE AT LEAST 48 HOURS' NOTICE TO CANCEL AN APPOINTMENT. IF YOU CANCEL LESS THAN 48 HOURS BEFORE THE APPOINTMENT, YOU ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR MY FULL FEE. BY BOOKING AN APPOINTMENT WITH ME THROUGH ZOCDOC, YOU ARE AGREEING TO ABIDE BY THIS POLICY.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We begin with an intake session, where I collect the history of the problems for which you are looking for help. We establish your goals for therapy as well, and I collect additional history about your life, including your upbringing, formative experiences, trauma, medical problems, etc. After this, we will meet weekly, and focus on 1-2 issues of your choosing each week. These are usually related to goals established at our intake session, but they don't have to be. Whatever you feel would be most helpful each week is what we will focus on. By learning that you can affect change on your life, you will gradually feel better about the issues that brought you to therapy in the first place. Usually, within 2-4 months, clients feel that they have acquired enough skills that they are ready to reduce how frequently we meet. This typically means going from meeting weekly to meeting every 2 weeks. Then, if progress continues, we will then continue to monthly, then quarterly, and then to ending our work together. Of course, some people need longer to feel comfortable reducing frequency, and many like meeting every month or two indefinitely, just to check in, brush up on skills or discuss a particularly challenging issue that has come up recently. I am not looking to have you remain in therapy for the long term, but will be available to you for as long as you feel that it is helpful.
