What should a new client know about working with you?

I conduct a thorough intake process but will always honor any limitations in what a person is comfortable sharing. It is important to me that I teach and model honoring the messages our minds and bodies give us. I begin all treatment with psychoeducation where I invite reflection of one's own experiences with the topics taught. Progress with clients typically looks like recognizing their automatic responses and feeling empowered to understand and know how to respond to their mind and body messages. The triggers and symptoms become a source of growth versus something to fear.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

A typical session can vary depeding on the goal. If the goal is psychoeducational, I teach the information, give examples, and invite my clients to reflect on their experiences to help the information stick. When teaching skills, I explain the process and goal of the skill, and guide clients through new skills. When the goal is processing, this is when I invite recent difficult events/triggers to guide a patient through emotion-focused, somatic-focused, compassionate interventions aimed at releasing experiences stuck in the body. Depending on the severity of traumatic life events, there may be several practices of learning to shut off the threat response before beginning other regulation practices. Chronic pain treatment may be a stand alone process, but often is woven with trauma and safety work.
