Getting to know Patrick Rettig

Who I help: I work with college students and adults dealing with anxiety, depression, OCD, and trauma. How I help: Most modern therapies focus only on managing symptoms and assume that most patients will respond equally to the same treatment. But you are unique, and so are your thoughts, behaviors, relationship patterns, and symptoms. Psychodynamic Therapy treats the cause of your symptoms. Together, we'll explore where your unique thoughts, behaviors, relationship patterns, and symptoms came from, what function they served for you, and replace them with better alternatives to free you from old patterns that have kept you anxious, depressed, obsessing, or stuck in trauma patterns. Education: I hold a Master’s degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Ohio State University. Off the clock: In my free time, I enjoy running, hiking, fly-fishing, and spending time with friends, family, and loved ones.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Whether you have been to therapy before, or this is your first time, you are in the right place. FOR BEGINNERS: My initial training and education was in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) which is most commonly practiced today and is great for patients who are new to therapy and are looking for tips on how to better manage their emotions, relationships and symptoms. FOR THOSE LOOKING FOR LONG TERM CHANGE: Psychodynamic Therapy takes a deeper approach, and explores how past experiences and relationships influence your experiences and relationships today. Through my years of experience, I have found CBT and just managing symptoms is not enough, and that many of my patients have benefitted significantly from really getting to know themselves on a deeper level. Psychodynamic Therapy can help you learn more about WHY you are feeling the way you are. Once you know the "Why", then we can figure out the "HOW" to make deeper level changes, that often lead much longer lasting positive effects on your emotions, relationships, and ability to navigate life.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

In your therapy session we will focus on you. This is your place to vent, express, talk, and explore how you are feeling with guided expertise. Most of the time I'll be listening, getting to know you, your symptoms, and where you would like to get to. Together we can get to know why you are struggling with your particular concerns, whether its anxiety, depression, the after effects of trauma, or obsessions and the areas of your life these symptoms interrupt like relationships, work success, or your overall ability to enjoy life. As an expert who specializes in seeing how past events and relationships contribute to current symptoms of mental suffering I can help you make sense of why you are feeling the way you are, and come up with a plan for you to start feeling better. If you are ready to learn about yourself and finally break free from your struggle and suffering, book an appointment with Patrick Rettig Therapy today.
