Getting to know Peter Schmitt

I specialize in working with men, couples, and individuals navigating relationship challenges, life transitions, and questions of identity and connection. As a relational psychodynamic therapist with Gottman Method training, my approach is rooted in the belief that our relationships, with others and ourselves, shape both our understanding of the world and our capacity for growth and change. My work focuses on helping clients explore the patterns, histories, and experiences shaping how they move through the world. Together, we'll examine the beliefs and perspectives that color your relationships and sense of self, building self-understanding and self-compassion in ways that open up new possibilities. Whether you're working through difficulties in a romantic partnership, feeling disconnected from the life you want, or trying to understand what's holding you back, therapy creates a space to reflect, process, and grow. In sessions, I work with clients to create an environment where difficult aspects of life can be approached with curiosity and compassion. Our goal is not just to increase insight, but to also create lasting and meaningful change in their lives. I hold an MEd in Mental Health Counseling from Columbia University. Before private practice, I trained and worked at the Kull Initiative for Psychotherapy (KIP), an LGBTQ+-focused clinic in Manhattan, where I also served as a supervisor and instructor. I have also authored research published in Counselling Psychology Quarterly and Psychological Science.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I work primarily from psychodynamic, emotion-focused, and family systems approaches. I believe that relationships form the core of our experiences, and because of that, the therapeutic relationship itself is one of the most powerful tools in therapy. By bringing an authentic and empathic approach to our work, I help clients explore and access parts of themselves they may have closed off in the past. Through exploring past experiences and working toward positive change in the present, therapy can help increase your ability to navigate relationships, understand your emotions, and advocate for yourself. I strive to bring my authentic self into the therapy space as a way of helping my clients to do the same.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our initial consultation will be a chance for us to get to know each other and determine whether we'll be a good fit for working together. We'll spend roughly thirty minutes discussing what is bringing you into therapy, your past experiences with therapy, and relevant history. I'll explain my approach and provide time to answer any questions you may have about what working together will look like. For couples, our initial session will take place with both partners together. If we determine we're a good fit to work together, we'll then have individual sessions with each partner separately. This is so I can learn more about each of your individual experiences before we begin our joint couples sessions.

Peter is the best therapist I’ve worked with in my years of going to therapy. In addition to being truly a kind person, he is very perceptive and shows a deep understanding of the work he does. I would recommend him to anyone looking to start therapy.
After a couple of sessions with two therapists that just felt off, I had almost given up on the whole idea of counseling. I had a family friend recommend Peter and I’m so grateful I met with him when I did. He is warm, caring and thoughtful. I was able to make some long overdue life changes thanks to our work together.
I've had such a positive experience with Peter. He's patient, warm and really insightful, and has helped me navigate some pretty challenging moments professionally and personally. I look forward to our sessions every week.
