What should a new client know about working with you?

I am a seasoned psychologist/therapist with over 35 years of experience working with clients struggling with a wide variety of life problems and stressors. I have worked in primary care doctors' offices, and in various outpatient settings including mental health agencies and private practice. I directed a college counseling center. I'm familiar and have experience working with a wide variety of problems including depression, anxiety, stress, relationship problems, and much more. I value treating people with the respect they deserve as they try to navigate life. I have been told I'm easy to talk with. I enjoy some humor at times when appropriate. I am very thorough and seek as much information as a client is willing to give.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Typically, the first part of any effective therapy is information gathering. I'm always interested in why someone is seeking help and why at this time in his/her life. I thoroughly gather information about their younger years and adult years as well. I'm interested in hearing clients describe in their own words how they are hurting, what they have tried to do about it on their own, and what it is they think could make things better for them. After information gathering, I try to summarize my initial thoughts and provide some direction for our work together in the future. I tend to be direct without being harsh or intrusive. I have found that most clients want to hear from me what I think and what I think may help as opposed to simply listening empathically.
