“Ron is an excellent professional who has helped me immensely with challenges in personal anxiety, communication, and relationship conflicts. In my opinion, he has always been respectful and fair with me, he is very direct when necessary (without being rude), and he has done a wonderful job of challenging me on the things I may be "avoiding" and also encouraging me when I don't recognize the progress I've made. Ron has a wealth of tools for a variety of situations, and when he has shared some of these tools for my specific situations (especially with stress management and conflict resolution), I am usually pretty amazed with how well they work. I am grateful to have met Ron several years back and I believe I have emerged from his counseling as a happier, more confident person who handles anxiety in a much healthier way - and am a better partner as well.”

Getting to know Ron Helpman

Ron Helpman, L.C.S.W., is a clinical social worker who has been in practice since 1993. After completing undergraduate degrees in biology (University of Sydney Medal in Biology) and psychology (Magna Cum Laude, University of Tel Aviv), he obtained his Master’s degree in Social Work from Hunter College, City University of New York. He has helped clients with a range of issues including: • anxiety • depression • procrastination • substance abuse • relationship conflicts • career and workplace issues. In therapy, his first goal is to help clients develop an awareness of the habitual thoughts and feelings that direct their actions. This awareness allows them to examine their assumptions and deal with their emotional responses in more self-enhancing ways. At the same time, taking action in the world, whether in relationships or work contexts, is usually an important part of the process. Likewise, looking back to childhood experiences can help make sense of those habitual patterns and identify unmet needs. More simply, feeling understood and respected by an impartial, nonjudgmental person can improve self-esteem and reduce shame and guilt that stand in the way of a good life.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I have an interactive style in which integrates cognitive-behavioral, interpersonal and gestalt approaches with an understanding of developmental psychology and neuropsychology. I have experience in working with issues of: motivation and attention (ADHD); procrastination; depression and anxiety; addictions; relationship conflicts; as well as workplace and career issues.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

After identifying the habitual patterns of thoughts, emotions, and behaviors that are getting in your way, we will work to develop satisfying and productive alternatives. Although looking back can help us understand the origins of unproductive patterns, learning to deal with current issues and planning for the future are even more important. Developing an in-the-moment awareness of the thoughts and emotions that underpin motivation will be a part of this process, as will learning techniques to manage those emotions.

I saw Ron for about a year - he helped a lot, we ended partly because I moved out of state but mostly because I was doing much better!
I have seen Ron for many years, and I would strongly recommend him. He is thoughtful, warm, and supportive, but knows when to push me to grow. He has helped tremendously with my anxiety, relationship issues, and mild depression. As a gay man, I feel comfortable talking to him about anything.
I’ve been working with Ron for a few years and can’t recommend him more highly. His care has helped me finally manage significant lifelong issues.
