Getting to know Ryan Thomas

I’m Ryan Thomas, LCSW, a clinical social worker at Darin King Counseling with 16 years of experience helping couples, adults, older adults, and teens 15 and up. My primary focus is marriage and couples therapy. As a social worker, I’ve built skills in negotiation, developing consensus, and finding compromise, and I use them to help partners see how their differences can become strengths instead of sources of conflict. I spent five years as a medical social worker and six years in community social work with older adults. That experience shapes my work with clients facing chronic health conditions, trauma, and grief. In our sessions, I draw on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Solution Focused Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Existential Therapy. When you work with me, you can expect to feel heard and understood, not judged. I stay calm and steady even when what you’re sharing is painful, and I give you room to talk freely. People have always told me I’m good at understanding others, and I’ve devoted that to helping people understand themselves, find peace, and strengthen their relationships. I hold a Master of Social Work from the University of Pittsburgh.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My style is calm, patient, and nonjudgmental. You can expect to feel heard and understood, and I won’t rush you or tell you how you should feel. I stay steady even when what you’re sharing is painful, so you can talk freely without worrying about how it lands. Much of my work is with couples. I come from a social work background built on negotiation, consensus, and compromise, and I help partners understand each other and see how their differences can become strengths. I also work with adults, older adults, and teens 15 and up on anxiety, depression, trauma, grief, and the stress of living with a chronic health condition. My years as a medical social worker and in community work with older adults mean I understand how health, family, and life changes affect your emotional wellbeing.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first session is about getting to know you. I’ll ask what brought you in, what’s been hardest lately, and what you’d like to be different. For couples, I want to hear from each partner so both of you feel understood from the start. From there, we set goals together and I tailor the approach to you. I draw on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy to work with unhelpful thoughts and patterns, Solution Focused Therapy to build on what’s already working, Motivational Interviewing to help you move toward the changes you want, and Existential Therapy to explore meaning, loss, and life transitions. Sessions are a conversation, not a lecture. We’ll check in on your progress along the way and adjust as your needs change.
