Getting to know Samson Wallerstein

Samson Wallerstein, MS, MHC-LP, is a kind-hearted, energetic, and thoughtful therapist with over six years of clinical experience. He earned his bachelor's degree in Counseling Psychology and master's degree in Clinical Mental Health Counseling from Johnson & Wales University in Providence, RI. Following a 13 month internship experience, Samson spent five years providing individual and group therapy to clients experiencing complex clinical challenges and significant mental health needs. During this time, he received specialized training and provided therapy using Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) and Radically Open Dialectical Behavior Therapy (RO-DBT). Samson enjoys working with adults experiencing anxiety, depression, men's issues, life and career transitions, interpersonal relationship challenges, and difficulties with emotion regulation and distress tolerance. He also enjoys working with high-performing individuals experiencing stress, self-doubt, perfectionism, or feeling overwhelmed, and helps clients identify what matters most and live in alignment with their values. Samson takes a collaborative, compassionate, conversational, and skills-based approach to therapy. He also has non-clinical experience working with student-athletes at Johnson & Wales University, giving him insight into the demands of balancing academics, athletics, relationships, and personal life. Outside of his clinical work, Samson enjoys spending time outdoors and in nature, staying active through sports and movement, and pursuing creative interests such as playing guitar and writing music.

What should a new client know about working with you?

He is an outgoing and collaborative clinician who is compassionate and driven to support clients where they are in their life circumstances, using humor and light conversation to build rapport and create strong therapeutic relationships. He emphasizes client autonomy, without pressuring or forcing anyone into work they are not ready for. He is strength-based and tends to focus on how clients can use their strengths to make progress on their goals, encouraging clients by motivating them for change. He is not afraid to go deep or explore hard situations and have hard conversations. He sees himself as a balanced clinician who can be comforting and also challenge clients when appropriate.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Samson starts by emphasizing the therapeutic relationship, rapport-building through light conversation and getting to know one another. He then helps clients to identify their strengths and areas of improvement, speaks with them about how they see and define therapy, and helps define a course of action or treatment plan with goals, focusing on smaller steps toward the big picture, including skill building and implementing weekly prompts (homework) when appropriate to reinforce active participation.
