Psychotherapist
MD
Hello, I'm Sandra Cushner-Weinstein, but you can call me Sandy. I have a long history of counseling individuals who live with depression, anxiety, grief, and chronic health challenges. I also work with couples and family systems, providing support to adults, parents, and teens. My approach is versatile and eclectic, often incorporating Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and mindfulness practices to help reduce anxiety and depression, improve focus, and manage trauma. I truly appreciate the struggle of finding ourselves in this complex world, and I am here to help you navigate it. Together, we will identify your goals, build skills, gain control of unwanted feelings, and develop a sense of hope. In addition to my clinical work, I have established two non-profit organizations to serve adults, children, and families with a member living with a chronic health condition. I am the founder and past director of PACT, Parents & Children Together, and Brainy Camps, which support children and adults with epilepsy, neurofibromatosis, Tourette syndrome, cerebral palsy, autism, congenital heart disorders, sickle cell disease, and transitioning youth. My mantra is to 'Have Fun, Be Wise & Live Well.' My past roles include working as the Director for the Epilepsy Foundation for the National Capital Area and the Multiple Sclerosis Society in Santa Clara, CA. I have also served on the Institute of Medicine (IOM) for the Public Health Dimensions of the Epilepsies. My research has focused on resilience, adaptive coping, quality of life, and parent stress among chronic health populations. I have published several papers and held faculty appointments in neurology, rehabilitation, and pediatrics at the George Washington University School of Medicine. I hold licenses in clinical social work and physical therapy in several states. I look forward to working with you and supporting you on your journey to well-being.
