Shannon Costello
Shannon Costello is a Licensed Associate Counselor (LAC) and graduated from St. Bonaventure University with a MSEd in Clinical Mental Health Counseling and a B.S. in Educational Studies. She provides evidence-based interventions delivered with empathy and warmth. Shannon truly values the therapeutic relationship with each client and strives to create a supportive, genuine, positive, and non-judgmental space. She believes each client is unique and deserves an individualized approach for their needs. While Shannon loves Narrative Therapy, Gestalt Therapy, and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), she utilizes an eclectic therapeutic approach to meet each client where they are at… with humanistic values always as the foundation.
Shannon has had the privilege of providing care in community mental health settings as well as on a college campus. Additionally as a former Division I athlete, she is an active advocate for increased mental health support for high school and college student athletes. Some of Shannon’s favorite professional opportunities have been going to high school campuses and speaking directly to students in classes and assemblies about mental health for student-athletes. She feels strongly that this open dialogue needs to start early and continue often for this demographic.
What should a new client know about working with you?
Working with teen and young adult student-athletes is in Shannon’s wheelhouse, she has also had very successful experiences working with clients of all ages struggling with trauma, anxiety, grief, self-esteem, depression, ADHD, and education related concerns (ex: time management, studying, test-taking, focus etc.)
Being a female, multiracial, and the daughter of an immigrant are major pieces of Shannon’s identity. She prioritizes empowering marginalized communities and is an active ally to the LGBTQ+ community, the special needs community, and survivors of assault and abuse. Regardless of age, gender, race, ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation or any other factor, ALL clients are welcome in this space.
With a background in elementary, secondary, and special education; experience as a college athlete and captain; 4 years coaching as a private baseball and softball batting instructor; 2 years assessing and connecting clients with appropriate services at a community mental health organization; one full year providing supervised 1:1 and group counseling services in various settings; and a lifelong commitment to allyship and advocacy for marginalized groups, Shannon brings a very unique perspective and passion to the helping profession. She believes every client has the capacity for growth and deeply values the opportunity to accompany clients in that journey.
