Getting to know Shawn Eaton

Please note: I do not accept BCBS Complete. I work with adults and couples who feel caught in reactions they understand intellectually but still can’t seem to change. Anxiety may never fully settle. Depression can feel heavy or disconnected. Old wounds may keep showing up in the present. Couples may care deeply about each other and still end up in the same painful conflict or distance. My work is grounded in Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), an attachment-based, experiential approach. Rather than only managing symptoms, we look at what gets activated, how you protect yourself, and what those reactions are trying to accomplish. For couples, we identify the cycle that takes over and help each partner respond in ways that create more safety, trust, and connection.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My style is warm, direct, and active. I won’t simply listen from the sidelines. I’ll help slow things down, notice what’s happening beneath the surface, and make connections that can be difficult to see from inside the pattern. Sessions often involve staying with emotions long enough to understand them, rather than quickly moving away from them or trying to reason them out. I may ask you to pause, turn toward a feeling, or say something directly to your partner. I explain what I’m doing, invite feedback, and adjust the work with you. You don’t have to know exactly how to describe what’s happening before you begin.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

We begin by understanding what brought you to therapy and what you want to feel different. Early sessions focus on mapping the pattern: what tends to trigger you, what happens emotionally, how you respond, and how that response affects you or the relationship. Once the pattern becomes clearer and feels less overwhelming, we begin working more directly with the emotions and needs underneath it. With individuals, this often means reaching experiences that have been difficult to access and developing a different way of responding to yourself. With couples, it means helping each partner share more vulnerable emotions and respond to each other in ways that create greater safety and connection. Throughout therapy, I keep the process transparent. We regularly look at what’s changing, what still feels stuck, and what needs more attention.
