Getting to know Shazakye Mustafa

Choosing therapy is a powerful act of self-compassion, and I’m honored to support clients in that journey. My approach centers on creating a safe, collaborative space where we explore how past experiences shape present emotions, behaviors, and relationships. I draw from trauma-informed, psychodynamic, and neurobiological perspectives—integrating attachment work, mindfulness, and polyvagal theory—to promote healing and emotional balance. I’m especially dedicated to working with individuals from BIPOC and intersectional backgrounds, helping them reclaim a sense of wholeness and authenticity. Together, we’ll work toward fostering greater self-understanding, resilience, and connection in your life.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach to building relationships with clients centers on safety, authenticity, and honoring their personhood. I recognize that the world often causes harm—both intentional and unintentional—and I strive to create a therapeutic space where clients feel seen, affirmed, and supported. Clients can expect warmth, curiosity, and collaboration as we work together to strengthen their sense of safety and self-trust. My hope is to help clients feel more comfortable sharing their light and truth with the world around them.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My clinical process begins with a comprehensive intake that includes biopsychosocial assessment and exploration of the client’s presenting concerns, history, and strengths. From there, I collaboratively develop a treatment plan that aligns with the client’s goals and readiness for change. My approach is grounded in a psychodynamic and trauma-oriented framework, using an integrative lens that considers emotional, physical, relational, and spiritual dimensions of wellness. Drawing from polyvagal theory and a trauma-informed, three-stage model, I begin with stabilization and emotional regulation, then move toward trauma processing and memory reconsolidation, and ultimately support clients in meaning-making and self-acceptance to foster long-term resilience and balance.
