Hi, I'm Susan. For many people, challenges can feel overwhelming or like they “don’t make sense.” Often it's embarrassing – or even baffling! – to realize that life and feelings have gotten messy or out of control. You’re not alone – many of us have been where you are! I very much look forward to getting to know you and helping you to sort things out. Here is what I think about how we come to find ourselves wherever and however we might be: I believe that we grow into adulthood from our earliest roots - sometimes those roots are solid, and sometimes they aren’t. Often when challenges and feelings “don’t make sense” there is an old rotten root causing problems. Those problems can show up in our relationships, work, or even in our hobbies or health. Sometimes they give rise to addictions. To understand someone in the present requires a therapist to understand that person's past. But “good” therapy goes beyond insight. Therapy should challenge the individual to take action in the present, despite their past. The therapy I provide is based on several schools of thought about change, but it is always distinctly client-centered, trauma-informed, and resiliency-oriented. After earning a degree in Psychology, with a dual emphasis in experimental psychology and childhood psychopathology, I completed my graduate degree at Phillips Graduate University, a Family Systems-oriented institution in Southern California. My early practical training was in a psychiatric practice that was heavily influenced by psychoanalytic and cognitive behavioral theories, as viewed through the lens of developmental psychology. Since then, I’ve integrated many other therapeutic forms. I've been a licensed therapist, treating mostly individual adults, since 1994
