Uakea Jose, LMSW, MSW

Psychotherapist
NY
I am a Licensed Master Social Worker (LMSW) with an MSW from Columbia University, providing trauma-informed, culturally responsive care to adults and families. As a Native Hawaiian, Filipino, Japanese, and Chinese clinician, I understand the ways culture, identity, family, and lived experiences shape our mental health and well-being. I especially enjoy working with BIPOC and first-generation clients, as well as adults of all ages navigating life transitions, identity, relationships, grief, anxiety, depression, trauma, and other challenges. My approach is warm, collaborative, and strengths-based, with a deep commitment to justice and liberation. I believe therapy can be a space to understand the systems and experiences that have shaped us, reconnect with our strengths and identities, and move toward greater freedom, self-determination, and meaningful change.

Getting to know Uakea Jose

What should a new client know about working with you?

I believe every person brings their own story, strengths, and experiences into therapy, and deserves to feel seen, valued, and respected. My approach is warm, collaborative, and grounded in the belief that you are more than the challenges you are facing. When we work together, you can expect a space where you can be honest, ask questions, explore difficult experiences, and show up as yourself without judgment. You do not need to have everything figured out before you begin—we can work through that together. I draw from trauma-informed, strengths-based, and family systems approaches to understand the whole person and the experiences that have shaped them. I see therapy as a partnership, and my role is to listen with curiosity, offer support and perspective, and help you identify meaningful steps toward the changes you want to make. Above all, I want therapy to feel human—a space where you feel comfortable being yourself, understood in your experiences, and supported as you grow.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I view therapy as a collaborative process where we co-create a space that feels safe, supportive, and comfortable for you to explore life’s challenges. While diagnosis can be helpful when appropriate, I place greater emphasis on understanding your individual experiences and how symptoms may be affecting your relationships, daily life, emotions, and overall functioning. Sessions may include talking and processing what you are experiencing, exploring patterns and underlying concerns, or learning practical tools to help you navigate difficult moments with greater ease. My approach is individualized, and I draw from Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), mindfulness-based approaches, Somatic Experiencing, and psychodynamic therapy. Together, we will explore what feels most helpful for you—whether that means making sense of past or current experiences, developing greater awareness of your thoughts and emotions, connecting with your body, or building concrete skills to support you outside of therapy. My goal is for you to leave sessions feeling heard and understood, while also gaining greater clarity and tools to move through life in a way that feels more manageable and meaningful.
