Psychotherapist
VA
Hello, I'm Bill. I grew up with curiosity and befuddlement in equal measures, and it was only in college that I began to trust in my ability to think and pursue a path that led to graduate work and training as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). My journey has been rich with diverse experiences, from serving as a hospital chaplain to navigating personal oceans of grief and loss. As an intern at a Veterans Administration behavioral health clinic, I saw firsthand how war and chronic mental illness intersected, presenting unique challenges to patients who often felt isolated even within their own families. My time as an exchange fellow at the Royal Edinburgh Hospital in Scotland and participating in an experiential workshop in group dynamics at the Tavistock Institute in London taught me to think not just with my head, but also with my gut. This holistic approach has been a cornerstone of my practice. After earning my MSW, I began my career at a state mental hospital before transitioning to a clinical associate role in the Department of Psychiatry at Duke. There, I introduced medical students and psychiatric interns to group and family work for patients in significant emotional crises. Throughout my career, I have directed both chemical dependency and behavioral health intensive outpatient programs. I am continually amazed by the resilience and transformation of those who embrace the journey of therapy. As a group therapist and in private practice, I have witnessed and welcomed the risk individuals take to accept personal chaos and seek assistance as a step towards integrating joy and increased confidence into their lives. I specialize in working with individuals facing anxiety, depression, grief, trauma, autism spectrum support, family and intimate relationships, life transitions, medical issues, spirituality, stress, addiction, ADHD, and dissociative disorders.
