Getting to know Zev Elman
Life is not random. Sometimes we have this intuition in the midst of difficult situations but are not sure what to do with it. Turning points are usually waiting for us when we get inside the themes brought on by the difficulty. I work collaboratively on finding those points of insight, putting them into workable terms, and taking actionable steps with you. In practice, this happens via a combination of approaches I have found effective. Including Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Object Relations theory, Yalomian Interpersonal and other models. I have several years of post-graduate institute training and experience including certificates from the National Institute of the Psychotherapies, the Object Relations Institute and the Institute for Better Health.
What should a new client know about working with you?
As a composer and professional musician (bass and drums), I bring creativity and lateral thinking to this work and understand unique life issues facing creative personalities. The sometimes long, winding journey toward actualization. I offer sliding scale to musicians and other artists.
I also specialize in workplace issues and managing business relationships.
What is your typical process for working with clients?
I work collaboratively and have spent a good deal of time working with unconscious dynamics, experiential avoidance, emotional entanglements, and the accumulated small 't' trauma of too much time in Sartre's 'bad faith.' My stance is broad (Bion, Balint, Bromberg, Kohut, Chekov, Pressfield, Dooley and others) and feel fortunate to have helped many people over the years.

Zev has been really great at working with me to help dissect and work through the things going on in my life, both in the general day to day as well as the larger life events. Zev and I have built an incredibly close relationship over the years, he is an extremely insightful and progressive thinker, willing to take an incredibly unique perspective on intimate issues so as to unlock profound and unexpected means of transcending past traumas and suffocating habits, Zev has done a lot to get me in touch with myself as an artist, to allow me to access pride in myself as creator, our time together is wonderful and exciting and I'd be delighted to recommend his services to others.

I have been working with Zev for many years through many different family, career, creative, and relationship challenges in my life. I always look to him when I am at a loss for answers or words. He is a great listener, but is also excellent at prompting you to speak about what you want to get out, which is definitely appreciated. He is patient and understanding with creatives, and he wants to get as much info before making an assessment of the situation. Every session is always an attempt at meeting me where I am, and more times than I can count I have walked away with a clearer understanding of what I am going through. If you're lucky you may even get a chance to hear him play bass! A thoughtful and creatively inclined person. I highly recommend a session with him if you are in a bind, need help organizing your thoughts, or just need someone to lend an ear.

I enjoyed my visit, Zev is a thoughtful and intelligent observer. Able to keep both the spiritual and intellectual aspects in mind in a way that is very comfortable for me. I’m not very spiritual inclined naturally, but keeping the soul in mind is important, as well as understanding the more complex scientific and psychological implications of situations on the mind. Zev is good at identifying both and recognizing the complexity of it all without committing to a resolution or explanation. Very much appreciate the sessions.

Zev is a excellent therapist with acute knowledge of the creative process, which has helped me a lot in navigating the psychological and emotional challenges of my own artistic career. He is not rigid or dogmatic in approach, but pragmatic and empathetic – he has thoroughly evaluated my needs and concerns and made a variety of suggestions, approaches, and habits to develop and work towards as I advance in my career. Further, he has introduced a spiritual element into my thinking about the creative process that has helped open me up in new ways as I journey forward. He is a great therapist!

It is hard, especially today, to find care that is actually representative of the word 'care'. Especially in the time of telemedicine it is impossible to find care that ACTUALLY cares- and I am lucky to have found that here. It is also nice to work with someone who is not explicitly secular, as it is comforting to have someone around who is also able to view things through a spiritual lens. I would recommend Zev to anyone, but particularly those who are either jewish or spiritual in any capacity at all. He has been a great help to me and I am very grateful for him

I was very fortunate to find Zev during a life crisis - struggling with anxiety, loneliness, and lack of meaning; slipping into depression. I’ve been doing weekly sessions with him for over 6 months.
Zev is a very attentive listener as well as patient in talking through many issues of self doubt, relationships, and life purpose. I have found our sessions to be deeply helpful and practical in daily life and always look forward to our sessions; on bad and good weeks.
I appreciate the balance he brings between hearing concerns, challenging self misconceptions/doubt, and providing insights into the human psyche and interpersonal dynamics. I also find our conversations stimulating on an intellectual level.
I’ve gone on a journey with Zev from the lowest point in my life to now the highest. I’ve become less self conscious and much less anxious with a brighter outlook on life. I give Zev a lot of credit and it is evident he cares about people he engages with. Cannot recommend him enough.

Zev was great to work with and helped me through a particularly hard time in my life. He uses a multi-pronged approach that differs from your standard therapist, for example recommending different books and the occasional astrological interpretation to contextualize something that may be going on. Highly recommend!

Zev helped me to stop talking and start doing. He quickly saw what was behind my words and helped me realize a show that I’d always dreamed of doing. Fear had always gotten in the way but Zev helped me recognize resistance and move through it until my dream was actualized.

Zev is extremely thoughtful, warm and compassionate while being simultaneously idiosyncratic, providing unique and unexpected insights. I never feel like Zev is forcing his perspective on me. He pushes back on necessary things and allows for the possibility of debate without ever being combative. I love working with Zev. I worked with Zev for about two years through various big changes in my life; career, relationships. He was supportive, accommodating, and always a steady and empathetic voice. Zev is a musician, so as an artist he was able to connect to navigating life as an artist. Overall, he helped me understand myself better and become a fuller, more emotionally whole person.

Since we started working together in 2018, Zev has helped me tremendously with managing ADHD, overcoming depression, and quelling anxiety. He is an empathetic, intelligent, and personable therapist with a holistic style and a deep skillset. Depending on my current needs, we might pivot between deep therapy work, lifestyle coaching, and professional consultation.

Zev is extraordinarily knowledgeable, versatile, and creative in his therapeutic approach. Throughout my experience working with him, goals and interventions are developed collaboratively in a way that honors my lived experience and his diverse wisdom and tools. Zev has a holistic view of mental and emotional well being that takes into account biological, social, community and spiritual health. Thus, he is very good at helping to prioritize essential tasks while always maintaining a view of the larger picture and overarching goals. Most importantly, he has always treated me with a seemingly infinite patience and kindness as well as compassionate understanding and acceptance of the challenges that accompany the human experience, whether or not it is accompanied by trauma.

Together with Zev, I have been able to pinpoint and develop my purpose, which is multi-faceted.
