Charles Smith, LSW

Charles Smith, LSW

Psychotherapist
PA
My path to becoming a therapist has been shaped by a passion for understanding people and supporting them through life's challenges. As a biracial male, my own journey has been deeply informed by navigating identity and trauma. My personal experiences sparked my desire to create a therapeutic space where others facing multicultural challenges, PTSD, depression, or anxiety know they are not alone. I earned my Bachelor's degree in Criminology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, where my studies and experiences working with diverse communities sparked a deeper interest in mental health and social work. Following graduation, I worked at a hospital providing support to patients experiencing mental health concerns. I later worked with adolescent males involved in a juvenile justice program, helping teens navigate complex emotional, behavioral, and environmental challenges. These experiences strengthened my commitment to advocating for individuals facing challenges and reinforced my desire to become a therapist. Driven by this passion, I earned my Master's degree in Social Work from Pennsylvania Western University. My experiences have shown me that people are far more than the challenges that bring them to therapy. I strive to get to know the whole person, not just what brings them in, and build our work together from there.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My Core Focus: - Teens, Men's Mental Health, Elder Adults - Trauma and PTSD - Anxiety and Stress - Depression - Emotional Regulation - Anger Management - Impulse Control - Communication & Relationships

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My approach is rooted in a strengths-based, trauma-informed perspective that recognizes every person's capacity for resilience and growth, regardless of the challenges they have faced. Because I understand the heavy weight of carrying painful life experiences, I hold an open, non-judgmental space specifically geared toward helping you process those memories and transform them into personal growth. I tailor therapy to each individual's unique needs, asking what you need or are hoping to gain from each session. I use evidence-based approaches, including Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) when appropriate, Motivational Interviewing (MI), and person-centered techniques. Whether you're navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, or behavioral challenges, my goal is to help you better understand yourself and build confidence in your ability to overcome life's obstacles.
