Getting to know Madison Summerfield

If you're anxious, high-strung, hard on yourself, or exceptionally good at overthinking a conversation that ended three hours ago, we might work well together. I especially enjoy working with adults in their 20s and 30s—affectionately, the girls, gays, and theys—who are navigating anxiety, body image, shame, self-esteem, relationships, identity, stress, and major life transitions. Therapy with me tends to feel more like a conversation than a clinical interview. I'm warm and easygoing, but I'm also direct. I have a particular interest in body image and shame, especially within LGBTQ+ communities, and I like exploring the broader relationship people have with their bodies—including movement and exercise, comparison, self-worth, and the expectations they've absorbed about what their body is supposed to look like or do.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I also enjoy supporting partners, family members, and loved ones of people experiencing eating disorders or addiction. Loving someone who is struggling can leave you feeling scared, frustrated, guilty, hypervigilant, or responsible for fixing something you ultimately cannot control. Therapy can be a place to focus on your experience, strengthen boundaries, and figure out how to care about someone without becoming their treatment team. I'm currently sober myself, so recovery is something I have lived familiarity with in addition to my clinical training. I don't assume my experience is yours, and I'm not here to tell you what your relationship with substances should look like. But if sobriety, recovery, addiction, or loving someone who struggles with substances is part of your story, you won't have to spend half the session translating the basics. Therapy with me feels more like a conversation, and I work especially well with clients who are comfortable being direct with me. I'll offer observations and interpretations, but you're the person actually living your life. If something doesn't resonate, I want to know. I strive to create a relationship where we can be honest, laugh when appropriate, talk about difficult things without making everything feel clinical, and still stay grounded in evidence-based care.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Clients can expect to meet with me for intake, which is 60 minutes of many yes/no questions, as well as open-ended, to help me better understand your goals. After our initial session, clients are expected to be seen on a weekly cadence until we run out of things to speak about clinically to fill our time. I utilize a system that sends text and email reminders that include the link you'll need to access our sessions. The link opens directly into chrome/safari/internet explorer, so you will not need to download or be logged into an app to access sessions. Clients also have access to our portal in which you are able to manage your schedule, pay your bill, and message me if needed.

Madison is a great therapist. She is very approachable and made my son feel immediately comfortable and at ease. I met her initially but I’m not in the sessions. I just know he is starting to open up about his thoughts and feelings with his family rather than just keeping everything inside. He seems happier, more relaxed. Madison has truly helped my son!!
