About Dr. Usiwoma Abugo
Usiwoma Abugo, M.D. has joined Katzen Eye Group as of January 2024. She is delighted to be returning to her hometown. Born and raised in Baltimore, Dr. Abugo graduated from Notre Dame Preparatory on a full, four-year scholarship before enrolling at Notre Dame University in Indiana.
After graduating from Loyola University Chicago’s Stritch School of Medicine in Illinois, Dr. Abugo completed a residency in ophthalmology at Howard University Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., followed by a transitional year residency at Bassett Medical Center in New York. Her research and academic excellence led her to being nominated and accepted into the Alpha Omega Alpha honor society as a senior ophthalmology resident. After her residency, Dr. Abugo completed a sub-specialty fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology and facial plastic and reconstructive orbital surgery at Central Valley Eye Medical Group in California.
Additionally, Dr. Abugo is very active in the Ophthalmic community. She has been an invited chair, moderator and speaker, as well as served on various program committees and industry advisory boards. Women in Ophthalmology, the National Medical Association, and the American Academy of Ophthalmology are among them. Dr. Abugo has led symposiums on diversity featuring leaders in the Ophthalmology community at these annual meetings. In 2022, she was awarded the Secretariat Award by the American Academy of Ophthalmology for her efforts to promote community and perspective during the COVID pandemic. Finally, her passion for teaching and commitment to excellence led her to be nominated and selected to be an Oral Board examiner by the American Board of Ophthalmology that same year.
As a member of her local church community and a creative writer, Dr. Abugo enjoys watching football and futbol and creative writing during her free time. She can always be found rooting for the University of Notre Dame (Go Irish!) and the Baltimore Ravens.
