Choosing to go to therapy can be a difficult choice. Often we battle the shame, “that I would consider therapy”. The stigma can deter us from seeking help we need. Or, maybe it’s the opposite the stigma of therapists “they are too judgmental, or they are crazy themselves” might be holding you back. Even though I am a therapist I share your skepticism of therapist and understand the fear of the stigma of going to therapy. I have been doing therapy for a long time and I believe the best therapy is a good friend and/or health family. I have also have done it long enough to see that it can also be a good tool in addition to those other key ingredients to social, emotional, mental health. If you are uncertain if therapy is for you take advantage of the free consultation. My approach I am a forward-progress, solution-focused therapist. What do I mean by that? I want to know where you are now and where you want to go. It’s not a deep dive into your history to determine what “broke you”. I want to move forward, and if there is anything from the past that is holding you back, it will present itself as we progress forward in our journey. When asked about our approach, it’s not uncommon to hear therapists spout off their theoretical orientation. To which I reply, “I am a cognitive, narrative, developmental, eclectic therapist. Which is psychological jargon for I believe our mind is powerful, shaping our choices and behaviors, and how we tell our stories has ways of freeing us or keeping us the victim. How we tell the story can set us free us or bind us up. We also must have an understanding of how we as people grow and develop. Therapy can be a place that helps us to find those places I still need to grow or develop. Jargon and over-explanation aside, my approach is conversational as we go on a journey of self-discovery and personal growth. My focus I have worked with many different populations and constellations of clients over the years. I love working with teenagers.
