Getting to know Abbie Zimmerman

I am a Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW). I received my Masters degree from Hunter School of Social Work in New York City, with the focus on individual psychotherapy. 25 years ago I moved to San Francisco. I found an amazing network of providers interested in addressing social change and advocacy. I began working for various non-profits working with high risk teenagers utilizing community organizing, peer mentorship and youth employment services to address their needs. Several years later I found my way back to family and individual psychotherapy, obtaining my LCSW and focusing on trauma, attachment theory and mindfulness practices. In 2012, I received training in EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization Reprocessing) helping those that had suffered for years with trauma, a way to heal the brain on a more permanent and organic level. EMDR is just one tool I use in my practice in addition to other approaches including CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy) and Mindfulness based treatment and Internal Family Systems.

What should a new client know about working with you?

The human existence has its duality. Positive and healthy experiences in our lives can enrich us, make us feel connected and help us have a clear understanding of what we want and deserve in our lives. For many of us, we may have also had negative or traumatic experiences which can affect our core belief systems, leaving us feeling unworthy, unlovable or stuck in a variety of other negative thought patterns or behaviors. My approach is caring and compassionate, with the understanding these negative experiences can be complex and deeply embedded in the pysche. We’ll work together to move towards the life you truly want to be living. I bring together experience that is both client centered and solution focused, and I offer an approach which is patient, caring and accepting. I work with the deep knowledge that everyone wants to feel respected and have a sense of purpose in their lives.

It's taken me years top find a therapist I can trust and open up to and I'm grateful to have found that in Abbie.
I've been seeing Abbie for many years - during the pandemic I moved further away and changed jobs so I sought care from new therapists due to location. 3-4 therapists later none compared to Abbie and I'm back. Abbie is the perfect balance between being a listener and also telling what I need to hear while also offering tools such as EMDR therapy when the situation presents itself. I highly recommend Abbie's care and would never switch again!
Abbie is a very professional but personable therapist--I have been working with her for years and have truly experienced major improvements in my ability to navigate my anxiety and the various challenges that come up. She creates a comfortable space where I have been able to have a voice in exploring the approaches that will work best for me. Her ideas and insights have been really helpful for me, and I also value her flexibility when my priorities of focus change. She provides feedback with compassion and honesty, and I feel that I can be candid and open with her at a pace that I'm comfortable with. She's extremeley reliable about keeping appointments and communicative and flexible when schedules change. I'd recommend working with Abbie to anyone, truly.
I began seeing Abbie five years ago after several traumatic experiences led to intense, recurring panic attacks. With Abbie's support, I've acquired useful tools for managing my anxiety. I also feel more comfortable identifying triggers and processing big emotions instead of holding them in. Therapy, along with daily meditation, has made a world of difference in my life. Working on one's mental health is a lifelong journey, and I'm so grateful to have Abbie along for the ride.
Abbie was fantastic! I felt heard and listened to, I felt supported and safe, and she was an incredible resource to help work through everything I was going through. 100% recommend!!
Abbie has a warm, engaging energy that I felt from our very first phone consultation. I was immediately comfortable in our sessions together and knew that Abbie would be there with me as I tackled challenging feelings and past relationships. I highly recommend Abbie to anyone new to therapy or even returning to treatment after a long time away.
Abbie has been a great therapist, she is very supportive and over time has built a trust where I can feel pushed/ challenged in positive ways. I went to her initially for anxiety issues and her implementation of EMDR really opened up the ways I was able to deal with my anxiety, and I now consider those tools an invaluable life skill. Her attention to detail and bringing things full circle is something I really appreciate about her, she has often brought things up in our sessions that I have forgotten about or never followed up with, it makes me feel valued as a patient to have her consistency
Abbie was incredibly kind and made me feel really comfortable from the start. She created a safe and supportive space where I felt heard and understood. Her warmth and patience made it easy to open up, and I truly appreciated her thoughtful approach. I highly recommend her to anyone looking for a compassionate therapist!
Abbie is an exceptional clinician who has been instrumental in my healing journey. I wholeheartedly recommend her with no hesitation or reservations.
