Adam Bernard, MA

Psychotherapist
3047 N Lincoln Ave, Chicago, IL
Adam Bernard is a pre-licensed provider working under the supervision of a licensed practitioner. Hello, my name is Adam! I believe every person deserves a space where they can explore essential parts of themselves and their most important relationships without being judged or criticized. I have always been a supportive, curious, optimistic, and empathetic presence in my personal relationships. Working as a case manager in community mental health reinforced my decision to become a therapist. I supported clients in accomplishing goals they once thought were difficult or impossible, from maintaining employment to becoming more effective in their important relationships. Witnessing clients take small steps and make incremental changes in the face of self doubt inspired me to keep pursuing this field. I've seen how being seen and understood by another person can offer someone a new perspective on whatever they're working through, and watching people grow into who they've always wanted to be is an incredibly rewarding experience.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I am interested in working with individuals and couples to support them in better understanding themselves and fundamental parts of their life, relationships, and personal journeys. My areas of focus include anxiety, depression, men’s issues, relationship concerns, interpersonal effectiveness, identity formation, work-life balance, emotional regulation, and life transitions. I am LGBTQIA+ affirming and strive to create a sex positive space in session. Every client comes to therapy at a different point in their journey, so it's important to me to meet each person where they are. I believe environmental and systemic factors shape each person's mental health experience. Witnessing my clients break down personal barriers and grow more comfortable being vulnerable inspires me to think more deeply about their experience. I have great respect for anyone willing to take that first step.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I am intentional about building a safe, comfortable space for exploring whatever concerns each individual and couple brings into session. I believe every person has the capacity to change, heal, and better understand how they show up in the world, and I pride myself on being patient and flexible as I support clients toward their goals. We will work together to develop skills to manage distress and feel more equipped to face life's challenges. Building insight into one's emotions, thoughts, and behavior illuminates patterns and opens new avenues for growth, helping a person access their own creativity and capacity for kindness toward themselves and others. I take an integrative approach, shaping our work around what each client wants it to look like. I am proud of you for taking the first steps toward becoming who you want to be, and I feel lucky to accompany you on that journey.
