My passion lies in helping individuals manage their mental health and supporting couples through mental health struggles, gender transitions, and polyamory. I hold a Master's in Social Work from the University of Pennsylvania. I work alongside my four-legged partner, a Samoyed therapy dog named Eir, who provides comfort and support and takes an active role in play therapy with our younger clients. Getting to know Alana Prato-Shein

I work with clients to develop deeper insights into thought and behavior patterns and to improve their relationships. Additionally, I have a history of providing equine-assisted psychotherapy.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I require a phone call (about 10 minutes) before the first session so that I can answer any questions you have and make sure you understand billing and practice policies! I approach therapy dynamically, helping patients to gain insight into maladaptive patterns that have been causing suffering. I also incorporate aspects of animal-assisted therapy, mindfulness, dialectical and cognitive-behavioral therapies, acceptance and commitment therapy, emotionally focused therapy, and guided imagery with patients based on their needs. When working with couples, I utilize emotionally focused therapy techniques as a way to foster connection and intimacy. With my younger patients, I use play therapy and animal-assisted play therapy techniques. Because play is a primary form of communication for children, I am able to use play to gain insight into their struggles and create metaphors to help them develop life skills and coping mechanisms. Please note that for clients under the age of 12, I only offer in-person sessions (no virtual sessions).

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I strive to provide a warm and supportive atmosphere for clients to process their difficulties and find paths forward into a more fulfilling and empowered life. Much of each session is giving clients the space to talk through concerns and explore their pasts, while I help to find patterns and explanations for emotions and behaviors. With couples, I help each individual understand and share deeper feelings to help build empathy and emotional intimacy. With children, sessions are less structured and are based on using play to form metaphors for their struggles.
