Getting to know Alena Kearney

Welcome! I'm Alena, and I'm a licensed clinical social worker (LCSW) in the states of Pennsylvania and New Jersey. I have 15 years of post-master's experience providing group and individual therapy to adults. I hold a Ph.D. in Human Sexuality Studies, and specialize in working with people who feel that their sexual behavior is out-of-control or compulsive. I am also trained to work with folks around a variety of other sexuality- and relationship-focused issues, including communication styles/skills, infidelity, identity development (sexual orientation/gender), and sexual trauma. Finally, I have extensive experience working with folks who are facing challenges associated with depression, anxiety, grief/loss, and life transitions.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach to therapy is informed by psychodynamic and cognitive behavioral theories. This means that I'll work with you to help you develop 1) an awareness of your current thought processes, and 2) an understanding of how your life experiences have influenced the way you think. I'll offer you concrete tools to help you modify ways of coping that no longer serve you. My goal is to empower you to make the meaningful, positive changes you're seeking. Regardless of what brings you to therapy, I believe very strongly that all human beings are resilient, capable, and deserving of care and compassion.
