Getting to know Alesha Bynes

Alesha Bynes is a licensed social worker currently working under the supervision of a licensed practitioner. Their current employer is Serenium Manalapan. She earned her Master's in Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis and is currently employed by Mindful Healing. My ideal client is intelligent, resilient, and resourceful but may not realize it or that they have options. Because all humans have been raised in or exposed to environments with varying degrees of dysfunction, my client would come to me already having decided that change is needed. While this might be scary at first glance and they may not know what that change looks like, they would be willing to look at counseling as an opportunity to ascertain what those options might be and, in the end, choose to do something new within themselves, their environment, or change it altogether.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I view my role as a facilitator of change and healing. I do this for those who may be experiencing disruption of the norm or blockages changing on their own. Perhaps, they may not know where to start. Thus, I want to be a voice of hope in the changing or healing process (which I believe are one and the same) to those I serve. In other words, if one wants to change (or heal), and even if life has forced them to require mental health services, they may have to consider possible changes in some aspect of their current situation. My function, then, would be, first and foremost, to comprehend who is before me. This is where my active listening skills would come into play, as well as seeking clarification, and using open-ended questions to understand the client. I would also be interested in their verbal as well as non-verbal cues to inform me regarding things they may not be articulating. Then, through strength-based counseling, crisis intervention, trauma-informed care, the empowerment of women, and pastoral care counseling, with the use of evidence-based practices, I would utilize the seven following stages of the helping process in social work (from the General Intervention Model) to achieve their goals: engagement, assessment, planning, implementation, evaluation, termination and follow-up. I firmly believe clients usually know what they need deep inside of them...facilitators (counselors) help bring it out.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

My ideal client is intelligent, resilient, and resourceful but may not realize it and that they have options. Because all humans have been raised in or exposed to environments with varying degrees of dysfunction, my client would come to me already having decided that change is needed. While this might be scary at first glance and they may not know what that change looks like, they would be willing to look at counseling as an opportunity to ascertain what those options might be and in the end, choose to do something new within themselves, their environment or change it altogether.
