Psychotherapist
225 30th St, Ste 306, Sacramento, CA
I’m Dr. Alex L. Andrade Jr., PsyD, a licensed clinical psychologist with nearly 15 years of experience providing psychotherapy. I work with adults experiencing concerns such as anxiety, depression, stress, trauma-related concerns, grief and loss, relationship difficulties, self-esteem, work and career challenges, life transitions, health-related concerns, and other emotional or psychological concerns. I also work with people who may not have a specific diagnosis but recognize that they feel stuck, overwhelmed, or ready to make meaningful changes. My approach is individualized, collaborative, and grounded in evidence-based psychological practice. I believe effective therapy begins with understanding the person rather than simply focusing on a diagnosis or symptoms. My professional experience includes private practice and integrated healthcare settings, working alongside medical professionals. This has shaped my understanding of the connection between psychological well-being and other areas of life. I have also been involved in professional education, training, and community service. I believe therapy should provide both a supportive environment and a meaningful opportunity for change. Some clients benefit from focused, shorter-term therapy addressing a specific concern, while others benefit from longer-term work exploring longstanding patterns or more complex difficulties. I tailor the pace, focus, and approach of treatment to each person’s circumstances and goals. Whether you are seeking therapy for a specific problem, navigating a difficult transition, or simply recognize that something in your life could be different, my goal is to provide a respectful, nonjudgmental environment where you can speak openly, gain perspective, develop effective strategies, and work toward meaningful change. I offer both in-person and video psychotherapy.

What should a new client know about working with you?

A new client should know that you do not need to have everything figured out before starting therapy. You do not need to know exactly what is wrong or what you want from treatment. Part of our initial work together is understanding what brought you to therapy, what has been happening, and what you would like to be different. My style is warm, conversational, collaborative, and nonjudgmental. I want clients to feel comfortable sharing while also knowing that our sessions have purpose and direction. I will listen carefully, ask questions, offer observations and feedback, and help you understand patterns and consider different perspectives. I do not approach therapy as a one-size-fits-all process. Different clients need different things from therapy. Some people want practical strategies for managing anxiety, stress, relationships, or difficult circumstances. Others want to better understand longstanding patterns, emotions, relationships, or experiences that continue to affect them. Often, therapy involves both insight and practical change. We will determine together what is most useful based on your concerns, goals, and progress. I believe clients should have an active role in therapy. Your perspective matters, and I encourage open communication about what is and is not helpful. My experience in integrated healthcare has also taught me to consider the whole person. Psychological concerns can affect physical health, relationships, work, and daily functioning, while medical concerns, stress, and life circumstances can affect emotional well-being. When relevant, these connections can become part of our work. You do not have to be in crisis to benefit from therapy. Whether we meet in person or through video, my goal is to create a professional environment where you feel heard, respected, and supported.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

The first session is an opportunity for us to get to know one another and begin understanding what brings you to therapy. We will discuss the concerns or circumstances that led you to seek treatment, relevant aspects of your history, how these concerns are affecting your current life, and what you hope to accomplish. I will ask questions to better understand your thoughts, emotions, behaviors, relationships, and current circumstances. While I need enough information to understand your concerns and provide appropriate care, the initial session is also an opportunity for you to experience what working together may feel like and ask questions. We will begin identifying goals and considering what approach may be most appropriate for you. As treatment progresses, sessions are generally conversational and focused on the issues most relevant at that point in your life. We may explore thoughts, emotions, behaviors, relationships, past experiences, current stressors, or patterns contributing to difficulties. We may also work on practical strategies, coping skills, communication, and problem-solving. Treatment can be relatively brief and focused on a specific concern or transition, or it can continue longer when there are more complex or longstanding concerns. I periodically review goals and progress rather than assuming the original treatment plan should remain unchanged. Your feedback is an important part of the process. If something is working, we can build on it; if something is not helpful, we can discuss it and adjust our approach. When relevant, I also consider connections between psychological and physical health and other factors affecting well-being. I offer both in-person and video psychotherapy. Therapy is a collaborative process: I bring clinical experience and an objective perspective, while you bring your experiences, concerns, goals, and feedback. Together, we determine what meaningful progress looks like.
