Getting to know Alexander Lewin

I am particularly passionate about working with artists and creative professionals. Artists have a relationship other people don't have — a relationship with their art. Like all relationships, it evolves. Along the way, there are frustrations, dreams, depressions, manias, fears, and an unceasing search for beauty. It can be a desperately lonely endeavor. To ask for an ally in the form of a psychotherapist is an act of moral courage. HOW I WORK The Power of Psychoanalytic Therapy I think of my work like this: the client is a river and I help remove rocks. As a candidate in psychoanalytic training at the Psychoanalytic Institute of Northern California (PINC), I'm a great believer in analysis and analytic therapy. Historically, psychoanalysis has prized insight as the main tool of healing and growth. But a more contemporary view — to which I subscribe — is that the therapeutic encounter gives the client a new relationship in which to safely experience fear, desire, envy, even love and hate — all the feelings that interdependency can stir up. In the context of that secure relationship, we will, together, do the difficult work of grieving losses, honoring fears, and understanding traumas. All of which will help you to become more alive to your immediate experience — to flow more freely. And as you feel more safe, honored, and respected in the therapy room, in time you will begin to seek — even demand — more safety, honor, and respect in your other relationships.
