Alexandra Acquaviva, LMHC

Psychotherapist
FL
I've always been the person people came to when something was off, long before I had a license to make it official. The moment that shaped my direction as a clinician was watching a close friend go through a PTSD flashback and realizing I didn't have the tools to help. That experience is part of why I became a therapist, and it's specifically why I trained in EMDR. Seeing it help people process trauma that talk therapy alone couldn't reach changed how I understand healing, and it's still the work I find most meaningful. I hold an LMHC/LPC/LCPC license and use Cognitive Behavioral Therapy and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing as my two primary treatment approaches. I work with clients navigating anxiety, depression, trauma, and substance use concerns, often where these show up as overthinking, self doubt, emotional reactivity, or a persistent sense of being unsafe or unsettled. My goal is to create a space where clients feel heard without judgment, understand the patterns that keep them stuck, and build toward lasting change rather than just symptom relief.

Getting to know Alexandra Acquaviva

I've always been the person people came to when something was off, long before I had a license to make it official. What should a new client know about working with you?

I bring a collaborative, empathetic approach to every session, and I believe strongly in building on a client's existing strengths rather than only focusing on what's not working. With CBT, we identify the thinking patterns, like all or nothing thinking, catastrophizing, or personalization, that feed anxiety and low mood, and work together to build more balanced and adaptive ways of thinking. With EMDR, we target specific memories that continue to drive present day distress, so you're not just managing symptoms but resolving what's underneath them. I prioritize active, genuine listening. You should expect to feel heard and accepted without judgment, and to be an equal partner in deciding what we focus on and how quickly we move. I'm also someone who takes continuous learning seriously, so my approach reflects current best practice in trauma care, not just what I learned early in my training.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Our first session is a collaborative assessment where we talk through what brought you in, your goals, and relevant background. From there, we build a trauma timeline together and establish coping skills, which gives you a stable foundation before we move into deeper processing work. This groundwork matters. EMDR is most effective when you feel resourced enough to handle what comes up. Once we begin EMDR, sessions typically open with a check in on what's come up since we last met, then move into reprocessing work tied to a specific target memory. Over time, you'll notice progress in two ways. Some of it is measurable in the moment, like your distress around a memory decreasing or your ability to believe something more helpful about yourself increasing. Some of it shows up between sessions, in fewer symptoms or a different reaction to situations that used to trigger you. Progress in trauma work isn't always a straight line, but these are the signs we track together along the way.
