Getting to know Alexandra Butler

*This provider does not accept any Medicaid or Medicare plans* Navigating our world today can feel overwhelming'especially when balancing personal relationships, finances, and work. On top of that, life's transitions, losses, and emotional struggles can make it even harder to find your footing. As an active listener, I provide a supportive space where you can be heard, understood, and empowered. My approach combines warmth with constructive feedback, helping you gain clarity and move toward your goals with confidence. I work with clients facing relationship challenges, grief, anxiety, depression, and other mental health concerns. Additionally, I have both personal and professional experience supporting neurodiverse kids. I help parents better understand and advocate for their twice-exceptional, autistic, and ADHD children, fostering stronger connections and a more compassionate path forward. I am bilingual and see both English- and Spanish-speaking clients. As a writer and the author of a memoir, I dedicate a portion of my practice to working with artists and writers to help them navigate the unique challenges of building and maintaining a career in NYC. I hold a Master's in Social Work from Columbia University, which informs my evidence-based and compassionate approach to therapy. You don't have to navigate these challenges alone'I'm here to support you every step of the way.

What should a new client know about working with you?

I work with individuals facing grief, loss, trauma, relational abuse, marital issues, parenting, and parenting children who have special needs. In our sessions, I am an active listener, help clients explore their strengths, and am direct but kind to ensure my clients get the most out of their experience.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

I am warm, collaborative, and focused on my client's goal for therapy. I challenge them when it is helpful in a mindful and direct way and invite feedback. I want my clients to bring the part of themselves they are afraid to show the world–to express their full self in session, to meet them with compassion, and pull apart what does and does not serve them. It is my job to help clients integrate what we learn in sessions so they can feel empowered in their lives, confident in their strengths, and compassionate toward their struggles. I work with many who feel they are "not enough," or alternately, "too much." I understand grief, what it's like to be out of sync with one's age group, and to be insecure professionally. I understand the unique challenges of being a parent to a child with special needs or a child to a dying parent. I will help you trace your personal and professional struggles back to your primary relationships, and help you replace unhelpful coping strategies with helpful ones.

Alex is a wonderful therapist who I am lucky to have found! She helped me work through processing grief and loss, managing complicated family dynamics, and taught me a lot of skills to help me access my deeper goals and feelings. I appreciate the way she shows genuine care for her clients. She listens and gives you the space to come to your own conclusions while maintaining a sense of guidance with incredibly insightful input. I would absolutely recommend working with Alex if you are looking for a therapist.
Alex was a FANTASTIC therapist. She pushed me to examine my feelings and sit in them rather than judging myself from a surface level. She helped me progress far more than I have with other therapists. Her observations are astute and she genuinely cares about you. She provides nuanced guidance that encourages learning and growth. I wish I could have stayed with her forever but unfortunately I moved out of state. Could not recommend her more highly, especially for anxiety/panic attacks/depression.
