Alexis Arzuaga, MA

Psychotherapist
50101 Governors Dr, Ste 280, Chapel Hill, NC
I entered the counseling profession to support individuals who are having difficulties facing life’s challenges. I have found that many people struggle because they have created unrealistic expectations about the support, relationships, and encouragement they need. I believe that as humanity becomes “busier,” life becomes more complicated, affecting relationships and how we see ourselves fitting in the world. Life is often full of difficult and complicated experiences that are difficult to overcome, especially without support. Ultimately, these difficulties distract us from pursuing what enriches our lives. My experiences provide me with insight into working with people struggling with illness, trauma, substance use, grief/death, and existential issues. I utilize a combination of psychodynamic, Solution-Focused, Motivational Interviewing, and neuroscience-informed methods. I specialize in Memory Reconsolidation interventions to help resolve underlying issues caused by distressing memories. My areas of clinical focus are veterans, first responders, trauma, substance use, grief/loss, Christian spirituality, and existential issues. My goal is to provide a place of honest and direct feedback so that all clients can safely gain awareness and identify challenging areas in their lives. I can provide all services in Spanish.

What should a new client know about working with you?

My approach is straight forward, honest, and direct. I help the client identify the root cause of their distress and help them resolve their debilitating responses to it. Resolving an issue can vary by person based on their needs.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Essentially there are two phases. Initially, we will address the presenting problem and address its root-cause. Depending on the person, this could take 2-5 sessions. Through a specialized intervention process, we will work on resolving the presenting issue. The interpretation of resolving an issue will vary depending on each person - it is individually tailored. If needed, we could work on other important issues. Once these issues are resolved, we begin the second phase, where we work on identifying and developing new life goals and address existential issues based on the understanding of those new goals.
