Getting to know Alison Hickman

You are taking an important first step by investing in yourself with therapy. Let’s understand your experiences better and work toward developing happiness. I practice psychodynamic psychotherapy; which means I attend to the cause and not just the symptom. You do your best to say whatever comes to mind and I do the rest! I work in depression, anxiety, identity or stage-of-life issues, illness, loss, difficulty trusting your decisions, fluctuating self-esteem, career, and relationship struggles (with family, friends, or significant others). First and foremost, I value compassion for all living beings and would never ask someone to be something they are not. In addition to being a general practitioner, I offer specialized treatment to the LGBTQIA+ community and pet bereavement services. Pets are part of our families and should be treated as such. I hold a Master’s in Clinical Social Work from New York University and a Certificate in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy from the Metropolitan Institute for Training in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy. I believe this profession requires lifelong learning and continually educate myself in theory and clinical training from the best resources our field offers. In addition to my extensive training in psychoanalytic psychotherapy, I am training to be a health coach! The fields of lifestyle and functional medicine align with my values by seeking to treat the cause and not just symptoms. My aim is to assist clients with overall wellness, as struggles with physical health are often tied to emotional wellbeing. I make every effort to convey warmth and caring while assisting you on your journey to knowing yourself better and becoming the best version of yourself. An initial consultation will give you a better sense of me, how I work, and if you'd like to continue. **PLEASE NOTE: I take most AETNA and OPTUM / United plans IN-NETWORK. I also work with HORIZON BCBS NJ DIRECT.. I also work with HORIZON BCBS NJ DIRECT.

Alison helped me understand the ways in which I was contributing to my own deprivation. She did not make me feel judged; but instead, made me think. As a result, I am able to make significant changes in a positive direction!
Alison is a warm, empathetic, and obviously highly skilled professional with a down-to-earth demeanor. She demonstrates respect for my point of view while challenging certain obstacles I create for myself. Our work has provided me with important insight which has enabled me to make progress in several areas of my life.
I was very content with her style and the way I felt was able to express myself freely. Alison is very professional and kind. I would highly recommend her and am looking forward to working with her.
Alison Hickman was recommend to me by a colleague and I am very happy about the progress I made since working with her. She is insightful emphatic and easy to talk to. I felt at ease with her from the start. She is different from therapists I've seen in the past. She is relatable and doesn't tell you what to do, which I find refreshing. I would highly recommend Alison. I love that she has flexible hours and near transportation.
