Getting to know Alla Shapiro

Becoming a therapist felt less like choosing a career and more like answering a calling. I've always been fascinated by the ways people struggle with self-acceptance, emotional connection, and relationships. I saw how shame, self-doubt, and pressure to meet expectations can affect not only how we see ourselves, but also how we communicate with partners and family members. This curiosity led me to psychotherapy and ultimately to specializing in couples therapy, relationship counseling, parenting support, and maternal mental health. Today, I help clients break free from cycles of conflict, disconnection, and self-criticism so they can build healthier relationships, strengthen emotional intimacy, and create more fulfilling lives.

What should a new client know about working with you?

Most couples don't come to therapy because they forgot how to love each other. They come because they've gotten stuck in painful patterns—repeating the same argument, feeling disconnected, struggling with intimacy, navigating parenting stress, or trying to figure out whose mother is really causing the problem. My role is to help you slow down, understand what's happening beneath the conflict, and learn new ways of communicating and connecting. Drawing from Gottman Method principles, attachment theory, and family systems work, I help couples improve communication, rebuild trust, strengthen emotional and physical intimacy, and navigate difficult conversations with greater confidence. I create a warm, supportive, and direct therapeutic space grounded in hope and realistic optimism. My approach to psychotherapy and couples therapy balances meaningful challenge with compassion, helping clients move through difficulty while building clarity, connection, and lasting change. Therapy is not only a place to work through struggles—it is the beginning of something new, purposeful, and forward-moving.

What is your typical process for working with clients?

Therapy with me is a mix of reflection, clarity, and practical change. We slow down the moments that usually escalate into conflict—whether around communication, parenting stress, intimacy, or in-law dynamics—and start to understand what’s really happening underneath them. I bring a warm but direct style to couples therapy, helping you feel both supported and gently challenged. Sessions focus on improving communication, reducing reactivity, and rebuilding emotional and physical connection. Most couples find that over time, they feel less stuck in the same arguments and more able to actually hear and understand each other again.
